Of course i’m doing something doctor who related. Oof.

Doctor Who The Silent Stars Go By. Written By: Dan Abnett

The Doctor. He is tall, has brown hair in a quiff that sweeps to the left, strong jaw line. He wears a white button up with a red bowtie and a fine-checked Harris tweed jacket. His personality is bubbly and adventurous. He is very brave and curious and being a time lord he is very smart. (Just look up Matt Smith Doctor Who for his picture lol)

The big think that makes him different is that he is the last time lord. Amy and rory are human (other characters) but The Doctor isn't. In the story they are with other aliens but they aren't timelords. BUT what is similar is that he looks like your everyday human (except for the way he dresses.) Yet he has 2 hearts.

I can connect with this encarnation of the doctor because he is curious and is extroverted. I'm mostly extroverted and i'm always curious and try to find out new things.

The Doctors relationship with Amy and Rory is one of the big things. Amy and Rory are married and they travel with the doctor. They really trust him and know he will keep them safe. Of course they have their doubts but usually he does keep them safe. He really loves them, they are his best friends and he will protect them.

Hey Maya,

I really enjoyed hearing about the Doctor and how he is not really human. I enjoyed hearing about Doctor Who in general because I have heard a lot about the show but never seen it. My question for you is what similarities can you find between yourself and Amy and Rory?

Nice Job,
Gus

I really like how the doctor is such a interesting character and how in depth you go for him.

What about Amy and Rory? What do they have to do with this?

1. The Giver By Lois Lowry

2.The character I chose is the Giver. He is an elder in the community with a shaggy gray beard, he is also very intelligent. He suffers from PTSD due to the memories he has to hold onto.and very well respected, his job is to receive memories and pass them on to the next receiver, in this case it is Jonas.

3.The Giver is the only person in the community that truly knows about the past. It is his job to carry memories of pain and agony so that the rest of the community doesn't have to deal with those feelings. He is noticed by everyone else as another citizen, but he is really a lot different.

4.I can connect with the Giver because he has some memories of world problems I am experiencing right now. He has world memories of Hunger, Overpopulation, War and other horrible events. He feels severe pain being the only community member to know this stuff. While I am not the only person who knows about these things, they are painful and sometimes make me sad.

5.He seems to put on a normal character once around other community members, but with Jonas he can be himself. Jonas is going to take his job over someday, and I think that has blossumed a freindship between them that is special. It is special because It helps to have someone else who can experience what you have experienced.

Hey Gus,

Great job with this weeks reading logs! You got into a lot more detail and went deeper, especially with those. The last answer for the 3rd question is great because it connects to the second question about being able to connect your experiences to the characters in the story. My question for you is what are some of the Givers personality traits? Thanks Gus, keep up those fortnite wins!

Wonderful job,
Julian

Hey Gus,

It was very interesting to read about the Giver and how he is the only person who has to deal with the memories, and the pain that comes with those memories. Why does Jonas want to take over the Giver's job, even though it is a painful job?

Hey Gus,

Nice job on explaining the book about this character. When I was in 8th grade I read this book and I really enjoyed it it's really touching that it even made me cry. When I read this book I tried to image myself being Jonas and trying to feel what he is feeling as he is receiving the memories. If you were chosen to give up your normal life to receiving fun, deep, and painful memories that no one in the world knows would you accept to make that change in your life?

Nice job and enjoy your book,

Mafer

Hi Gus,

I think your connection is very interesting since it made me think what will people think about overpopulation, war, and other horrible events when the last people from our generation are dying off. What if all of these events are forgotten by the next generation and they are just plagued by new issues.

Overall, I think you're reading log has been very good, so keep up the good work.

Spend this reading log talking about one character in depth.

1. What book are you reading and who is it by?
I am reading Death Wave by Ben Bova

2. Choose one character. What is this character's name? What are some of his or her physical traits? Personality traits?
The characters name that I have chosen is Jordan Kell, who is one of the main characters. He is at a normal height around 5’ 8”, he has straight combed back silver hair. He is strongly built around his shoulders and usually wears slacks and a t-shirt. He is a leader, he is a diplomat so he’s a very strategic person, he is very passionate, he is determined and he uses what he has at the best of his advantage.

3. What makes this character different from other characters in the text? Does this character have anything in common with other characters?
This character has a strong motive to prevent the antagonist (in this case man vs. nature ie the death wave) and stop it from reaching other planets that house other intelligent life. All other characters in the story have no same motive as the main character which is ironic because it doesn’t affect just the main character it affects other intelligent life. Other characters have the same goal as him which is defeating the antagonist.

4. Can you connect with this character on any level? How?
The main character struggles with convincing the population of his ideas to deal with the antagonist. I can connect to this because I too have trouble convincing others of my ideas.

5. Talk about this character's relationship with other characters.
He is very close to most of the other characters, I think his personality lets people open up to him more which has been demonstrated when he has met new characters all throughout the book.

Something that I enjoyed from reading your response is how good your personal traits and physical traits were. Very in depth and detailed! A question I have is would you recommend this book to your peers? Also what other ways can you connect with this character?

Superb job on your response this week,

The way you explained the characters in the book makes me interested in reading it. I applaud you for making it sound very interesting, whether it's the characters, the plot, or the personalities, you made them sound so interesting. One question I have for you and this book is what are some ways of convincing people to follow you or your ideas? Other than that, enjoy the book and masterlock.

NON-FICTION:
1. I am reading "Wouldn't Take Nothing for my Journey Now" by Maya Angelou

2. "My faith is tested many times each day, and more times than I'd like to confess, I'm unable to keep the banner of faith aloft. If a promise is not kept, or if a secret is betrayed, or if I experience long-lasting pain, I begin to doubt God and God's love. I fall so miserably into the chasm of disbelief that I cry out in despair. Then the Spirit lifts me up, and once more I am secured in belief." (Page 34-35 of the book.) What makes this passage interesting for me is the author talking about faith and religion (which people can be very opinionated on) in a way that most people can relate to.

3. The author is believable because she talks about things that relate to everyone.

4. This passage reminds me of class presentations because before the passage begins, the author talks about the belief of many African religions that there are spirits in everything.

5. One thing that I have learned from reading this book so far is that sometimes you need to take a new direction in your life to be happy.

Rachel, great choice on the passage. I agree with you that Religion is a very sensitive subject but the way she speaks about it we can all apply to our thoughts. We’ve all doubted something one day than believed the next.

1. I’m reading Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins.

2. Katniss Everdeen Is a 16 year girl. She is tall, olive skinned, with brown hair and gray eyes. Katniss is sporty and a little boyish wearing a braid down her back. She’s smart, agile, corsage and caring. She supports her family by hunting and will do anything for her little sister and friends.

3. The thing that sets Katniss apart from the other characters is that she is willing to risk it all for her love ones, even defy the Capital. The other characters aren’t as selfless as her and willing to put their lives at risk for their love ones. The one character who she does have in common is Gale, he would do anything for his mother, brothers and Katniss.

4. I can connect to an extent to both of the characters Gale and Katniss because I as well would do anything for my love ones maybe not survive the Hunger Games but anything to make their lives more confrtable.

5. Katniss is best friends with Gale and goes hunting with him every Sunday afternoon. She’s also in love with him, but she’s denying it from herself because she must marry Peta to make the Capital happy.
Peta is in love with Katniss like the Capital wants but Katniss has a mixed feelings about him. She’s in love with him sometimes when she puts up with the charade for the cámaras but most of the time sees him as a friend.

Book: The Charm of Soul Pets
Author: 魚的天空(Fish’s Sky)

The one character I’m choosing from my book is the main character. The main character is Chu Mu, and his fate is unfortunate. The book starts off on an island explaining the places, and functions of this specific world. It’s a world founded on soul beasts or pets that you tame for power. These pets also include nightmare pets which devour your soul if they are stronger than you. The nightmare beasts are usually used for evil and demonic purposes. Our protagonist, Chu Mu is the heir to the Chu family and ends up being kidnapped due to an attempted assassination, and was brought to the Nightmare Islands for experiments involving the Nightmares. He is a child, and seems to be very knowledgeable and aware of the situation he’s in. Chu Mu acts very independent solely for the fact that he’s on edge for potential dangers which includes the people around him.

So far, the text introduced 3 characters, Ting, and Zhou Mosheng. Chu Mu and Zhou Mosheng are complete rivals due to the Zhou’s attempted murder on Chu Mu. Ting is the roommate next to Chu Mu and is very caring despite the situation she’s in.

I can somewhat connect to the main character, Chu Mu. For the age or around the age that he’s in right now, the experiences he has had shouldn’t have been exposed to him. I can say so for myself, I’ve experienced some horrifying things that I shouldn’t have been exposed to. Other than that, Chu Mu is knowledgeable, which makes him prepared to anything that might pop up, and I feel that I can relate to that.

Chu Mu’s relationship with other characters is very hostile, mainly for the reason that they provoked him first, everyone except for a few can’t be trusted. Most of the 50 people on the island will do anything to be in the 10 that survive, which means attacking other candidates. Chu Mu seems to be the center of all it because he receives many challenges, which are undercover attempts to weaken him by killing his soul pets.

I just finished the book The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur.

Some lines of poetry that really stood out me are:
“A man who cries -a gift”
“I am sorry this world could not keep you safe May your journey home be a soft and peaceful one -rest in peace”
“A lot of times we are angry at other people for not doing what we should have done for ourselves -responsibility”
“To hate is an easy lazy thing but to love take strength everyone has but not are willing to practice”
“What is stronger than the human heart which shatters over and over and still lives”
“You can imitate a light like mine but you cannot become it”
“The orange trees refused to blossom unless we bloomed first when we met they wept tangerines can’t you tell the earth has waited it’s whole life for this -celebration”
“This morning I told the flowers what I’d do for you and they blossomed”
“They should feel like home a place that grounds your life where you go to take the day off -the one”
“When you are full and I am we are the two suns”

These poems show strength in any situation and a bit of love in it. I chose these poems because I can connect with most of them.
I can connect to “I am sorry this world could not keep you safe May your journey home be a soft and peaceful one -rest in peace” a lot of horrible things are going on in the world and many people are losing friends and family members by such horrific situations.
Imagery is basically what it’s trying to explain and let you imagine what the author is explaining. She wants you to hopefully unravel different stories.

1: Artemis Fowl, by Eoin Colfer (My favorite book series)
2: I shall choose Mulch. He is a kleptomaniac (He as an un-tamable urge to steal) and is also a dwarf. In this universe, dwarfs are small in stature, and are green with leather overalls. Mulch himself has a large beard that lets him pick locks. No really, he plucks a hair from his beard and can bend it or stick it into a lock to get the impression, then his hair goes into a "Rigor Mortis" state, where is stiffens and becomes extremely strong. Comes in handy when you steal stuff for a living. He is greedy (obviously) but also crafty. Male dwarfs (like Mulch) can unhinge their jaw, allowing them to eat/dig through most substances like wood, clay, bones/flesh, and most forms of stone. However, when digging, if they are to ingest too much air, he REALLY needs to, how shall I say....."Let Go" of the air. He unbuttons his "bum flap" on his overalls and releases. It can cause a mini cyclone worth of air power, along with all the dirt, rock and clay he digested.
3: I think I resolved the first part of this question already, but he does have similar traits to Artemis Fowl himself, "crook", smart, crafty, and (partially) driven by money.
4: I'm not really sure. I mean, everyone can relate to eating a bunch of dirt and rocks, but that's not important. I guess I can relate to the "need to have something". Humans (such as myself) are driven by power and wealth over others. It's just that some people are better at hiding it.
5: He doesn't really like Julias Root, the Commander of the LEPrecon retrieval team, he hates goblins (the dwarf and goblin turf war is a thing, not to mention dwarfs hate fire, and the only species that can make fire, is goblins.), and generally only cares about himself (he does have a soft spot for stairs and general wild life though)

I am reading From Here to Eternity - Page 90 - Caitlin Doughy

I am choosing a real person named Sarah, who was very proud to be 7 months pregnant, but when she gets into a near fatal car accident her uterus gets impaled but in mexico getting an abortion for a woman is a hard task, and she couldn't get one in time due to the governments long process. She had a violent miscarriage which resulted in trauma and even rejection from family. She's weak and depressed, her life became silent and stopped talking to many friends.

This character is very different from all the others because she actually has a story told, unlike all the others. Characters` in this book are all real people but usually we only hear the names of the Author Caitlin, her boyfriend, and whoever's funeral they are visiting. So Sarah is the only other person who is alive and has a story about death, loss, and grief to share with our author Caitlin.

Not really. It's incredibly hard to connect to this woman in any way. I suppose a time when i had things out of my control was when I got a kidney stone, and had to remove it outside of hospital care.

Sarah has very little connection, her family abandoned her and she avoids people including friends. She speaks to the author Caitlin to tell her story and wishes nothing more, she talks further about the grieving process.

What book are you reading and who is it by?
Among The Impostures.

Margaret Peterson Haddix.

Non fiction/fiction: Even though this is a fiction story, this story seems like both real and not real. I think just the fact that they are at like a multi-purpose room. And I don't have any true connections to any of the characters in the story.

New draft.

1. What book are you reading and who is it by?

Among The Impostors by Margaret Peterson Haddix.

2. Choose one character. What is this character's name? What are some of his or her physical traits? Personality traits? The Character’s name is Luke. Luke goes by “Lee Grant” because he wants to hide his personality so he doesn’t get killed. And his personality is kind of alone because he doesn’t really have or talk to any friends.

3. What makes this character different from other characters in the text? Does this character have anything in common with other characters? This Character doesn’t seem to have any friends because he rarely talks to anyone in the story.

4. Can you connect with this character on any level? How?

In the past in this story, he did something bad and had to do like 100 pushups or something like that and never did what he did again. What I get in big trouble for, I usually don’t do it again because I know the consequences of whatever I did wrong.

5. Talk about this character's relationship with other characters. Luke usually seems to get along with most of the characters in the story except for one of the characters named “Jackal Boy”. And Jackal Boy didn’t like Luke, also known as Lee Grant.

1) A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin

2) Cersei Lannister, she is a very cunning and smart woman. She has bright green eyes and golden curly hair. She is also said to be a very beautiful woman. She is driven to protect her family no matter the costs. Even if that cost is another's life. She is a malevolent character. She is the main protagonist as the series continues into the 6th book.

3) Even though she is the main protagonist she is a very respectable character. She shows purity and heart, but on the flip side she shows evil. But, as the series comes along she goes off the deep end.

4) I can only connect to her on one very small level which is family. I would do just about anything for them, and so would she.

5) She is a bitter woman, she is spiteful and sees everyone with a hate lense. All of her family members were killed, except for he brother but they don’t talk.

1. What book are you reading and who is it by?
I am reading ready player one by Earnest Cline

2. Choose one character. What is this character's name? What are some of his or her physical traits? Personality traits?
I haven't learned of any physical traits besides that he is 18. I have leaned about him a little and he is a high schooler raised by a game called OASIS he is very witty and good at repairing things and that is how he pays for food. He also Lives by himself and scearches for the easter egg left behind by James Halliday

3. What makes this character different from other characters in the text? Does this character have anything in common with other characters?
He seems to be quite a bit smarter than everyone else in the book and he seems to be a big loner and not like people. Besides being human and living in a dystopian future he dosen't have a lot in common with everyone else

4. Can you connect with this character on any level? How?
Yes, I share his love and understanding of machines and I also like fixing things.

5. Talk about this character's relationship with other characters.
He seems to really hate his drug addict aunt who takes his food stamps and items of value.

I am reading The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R Tolkien.

I am choosing to write about Aragorn or “Strider” as he is more commonly known. Aragorn is described as being tall and lean with dark shaggy hair and grey eyes. He is a ranger which makes him very knowledgeable and composed. He is also a rather good leader with a pure heart.

Aragorn is a descendant of Isildur which makes him a Dunedain. The Dunedain or “Men of the West” were people of old that had longer life expectancy than they do currently. Amongst the hobbits he is travelling with he’s different because he is human, can speak elvish, is a ranger, and has seen much of middle earth. They are similar in the way that they all care for one another in their own regards and want to get to safety as quickly as possible.

I can't really connect with Aragorn all that well. He isn’t necessarily very hard to connect with i just feel like we are different in many ways. I am usually super energetic and sporadic and like to be led rather than to lead. I can really only connect with him in how he would do anything to stand up for the ideals and people he cares about.

Aragorn's relations with the other characters has been pretty solid since he was introduced. The hobbits found him to be a trustworthy individual right away. He is friends with Gandalf and Gandalf speaks highly of him. Frodo also expressed his fondness towards Aragorn once they reached safety.

I am reading The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison, Page 188.

2. Choose one character. What is this character's name? What are some of his or her physical traits? Personality traits?
Maya is one of the many girls who was kidnapped and taken into The Garden. She is a sweet girl, only sixteen years old when she was taken into The Garden. Suprisingly, the author does not give direct traits of this character, so I had to infer a little bit. Maya is gentle, kind, and intelligent. She speaks in a way that seems beyond her age, and acts mature.

3. What makes this character different from other characters in the text? Does this character have anything in common with other characters?
All of the girls in The Garden are very different from one another. Maya is different from all of them, in very specific ways. Maya is very close friends with a character named Bliss, but their personalities are very different from one another. Bliss always has a smile on her face, and is really good at hiding her fear or depression. On the other hand, Maya is more realistic with how she feels and is genuine with how she expresses her emotions. Yet at the same time, Maya is similar to Bliss, since Maya has hid her feelings countless times. I would say that Maya is most similar to a girl named Lyonette. Lyonette is known as the comforting friend that always welcomes new girls when they arrive in the garden, and when she died, Maya took her place.

4. Can you connect with this character on any level? How?
I feel like I mostly connect with how Maya sometimes hides her emotions. I normally am pretty straight forward with portraying how I feel to others, but sometimes I hide what I am feeling because of fear or stubborness.

5. Talk about this character's relationship with other characters.
Maya is a very down-to-earth kind of person to other characters. She tells them things as they are with sugar coating it, but also comforts them when they are in pain. I think many of the characters in The Butterfly Garden think of Maya in a positive way.

I think that the character you chose seems really cool. I also like the whole concept of the book, and how people get kidnapped and placed in a garden.

I am reading breakaway by Alex Morgan. This book is actually about herself and how she got to where she is today.
“Treat yourself When you reach a goal, don't forget to celebrate. I’ll never forget that day playing Mexico, mainly because it was my first senior national game, and of course, for the snow angels. I think we all get caught up in the relentless push toward a goal, and sometimes when we make it, we’re so tired that we don’t stop to appreciate the accomplishment. But being happy and throwing a little party for yourself shows that you deserve what you’ve achieved. Treat yourself well and have fun!.” This is a long passage but every word of it means a lot to me because there are a lot of people that go for a specific goal and what ever to reach it they don't treat themselves and they either get injured. I really see I can believe in Alex because she is telling her story that not always you win or loss. She also has a big variety of events. She has her riding really heading to hit the reader and help them make a change.
This text in general really connects to me in the way that I really feel it pulls me into her life and makes the reader feel like she/he is there living the moment with her. I have also learned the different injuries that anyone that runs a lot can suffer.

1. I just finished reading “the Laramie project” and it is by Moises Kaufman.

2. “I would like nothing better than to see you die, Mr. McKinney. However this is the time to begin the healing process. To show mercy to someone who refused to show any mercy. Mr. McKinney, I am going to grant you life, as hard as it is for me to do so, because of Matthew… I give you life in the memory of one who no longer lives. May you have a long life and may you thank Matthew every day for it.” Context: This book is about a gay man (Matthew) that was beat to death my two men. This quote was said by his father in court directed to one of the men that killed him. The parents of Matthew decided to not give the man the death penalty but to let him live. This quote really struck me when I read it. It was very interesting to see how they chose to let him live. If I were in their position I would probably act rationally and just want him to die. But in the end I could see why they chose that decision.

3. I don’t really understand this question that much. But, I don’t believe there is any bias from the author. The whole book is different interviews with different people and their thoughts and perspectives on the story. There were very few times that the narrator spoke but I didn't see any bias.

4. Even though it’s very different this book kind of reminds me of the shootings that have happened lately. I say this because in both the book and the shootings there is deaths that result in people talking about it and showing their different perspectives on it. And a connection I can make is in class me and my peers speak of these things that have been happening just like in the book the townspeople spoke with the interviewer and each other.

5. One thing new that I’ve learned was this whole situation. I didn’t know this thing happened. I never heard it and no one ever spoke to me that this terrible thing had happened in this town.

I really like your connections and choice of read. The whole story sounds so interesting and I like hearing your views on it all. My only question, (since I am just now hearing about this story as have you) when did it take place? Was it long ago when homosexuality was so universally misunderstood, or recent?

I finished reading Go Ask Alice. It is a real journal written by a real 15 year old girl who struggles with happiness and drugs. There is no author and it was published by anonymous.

I chose this section as the piece I would elaborate on “I can’t even control my mind. He words I wrote when I was out are just squirming little lines and roads with a lot of written crap and symbols in between. Oh, what am I going to do? I need someone to talk to. I really and truly and desperately do. Oh god, please help me. I’m. So scared and so cold and so alone. I only have you diary m. You and me, what a pair.” Firstly I am going to give a little bit of a backstory of what this excerpt is based about. This was when Alice was clean yet she was having troubles at school. She was talking about what she wrote in the diary when she was heavily tripping. I think this represents the book because it represents Alice and her struggles. Her loneliness and her confusion. This is also a great live to share because it does and outstanding position of creating a base of what the rest of the book if like, for your imagination. This really lets you into Alice’s life, it what it was.

There is no author of this book so there isn’t any opportunity to state is the author is fighting honestly truthfully or with or without bias.

I think I connect to this text easily because it has so many emotions and events in it. I think one specific event that I think I could connect to is when Alice started to realize that she cherish what she has and that she should get clean. I can connect to this because I understand that it can be difficult to enjoy life and go with everyday while throughly enjoying it. Unfortunately shortly after Alice makes this realization, she passes away at an extremely sad young age.

One thing that I have learned throughout the entire book is that drug asage and addiction scares aren’t something to be taken lightly. Alice goes on with her day to day life thinking drugs are a wonderful thing and that addiction is fine which most addicts do. You don’t realize the worst of something until you are out of it.

Hey Luce,
I think your book seems extremely interesting especially because there is no author. It was probably really interesting to learn about a girl right around our age dealing with the things she was dealing with and understanding the thought process behind her actions. Drug abuse is an extremely real issue with teenagers lately, and maybe this book would give you more empathy for the people doing it. I also think the part about her realizing she has a lot to live for is important because it raises the question about if it was better or worse for her to realize that because if she didn't she might have died with no regrets.
Nice Reading,

1: I am reading Planting Gardens in Graves by R.H. Sin.
2: loneliness was the reason
I held on to you
And holding on to you
Was the loneliest thing
I had ever done
3: What I like about this poem is how it talks about holding on to someone that you don’t even really love because you were lonely. Doing that was the loneliest thing the author had ever done because false love and desperateness makes you vulnerable to showing the wrong that you have done. They were the loneliest when they realized how lonely and desperate for someone they really were.
4: The personal connections I can make to this poem is that I have known people who have held onto people in their life that were toxic, but they didn’t know it until they let them go. They held onto them because they thought they were fantastic, thought they could trust them, and thought they were bettering their life. Other times people have gotten so captivated with that one person that everyone else around them feels betrayed so they are left lonely. Overall, sometimes people get too caught up with someone and I have had my fair share of people that have.
5: The literary devices I identified in my poem were irony, and authorial intrusion. These literary devices make you really think about what the author is trying to say, and make you feel like the author is talking to you, and trying to teach the reader a lesson. It brings you into the poem and makes you wonder who was this person, and what kind of relationship did they have with the author?

With the Lapps in the High Mountains: A Woman Among the Sami
By Emilie Hatt

“The children of the Lapps have for the most part many privileges and unlimited freedom and have practically no direct upbringing.”
I think this is interesting since this shows the the Sami children are less influenced by their parents, but more influenced by their surroundings and their culture. I think maybe we could learn more from this way of upbringing since I feel like we are too strict with children. I do not think that Emilie Hatt has strong bias toward the Scandinavians or the Sami, since I think she is simply there to observe their way of life. She does mention that the Sami have better hygiene than most people think which is interesting, since many people thought that the Sami were savages. I think one connection I can make to the test is that my mom used to yell at me a lot. I think one thing that I learned from the book that I have not already mentioned is that the Sami were actually respected by the Finnish settlers, but it was mainly the government that was anti Sami.

POETRY:

The book I barely started reading is called “The collected Poems of Langston Hughes”, by Langston Hughes himself.

I love to see the big white moon, A-shining in the sky:
I love to see the little stars, When the shadow clouds go by.
I love the rain drops falling; On my roof-top in the night:.
Dream-singers,
Story-tellers,
Loud laughters in the hands of fate- my people.
Dream-singers all,- my people.
Story-tellers all,- my people.
Dancers god! What dancers!
Singers-
Singers and dancers
Dancers and laughters.
Laughers?
Yes, laughers...laughers...laughers-
Loud-mouthed laughers in the hands
Of Fate!

I love how it talked about the importance laughter truly is.

Well it talked about dancing and singing, and what it had to do with laughter

This book adds a little bit of imagery. Imagery emphasize’s the impact of the poet’s words as they show and tell us with thier words what and how they feel.

FICTION:
Spend this reading log talking about one character in depth.
I am reading The Hobbit. The Author is JRR Tolkien
The character I am picking is Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo is a hobbit. He is very short has hairy feet and looks like a small human. Not to be confused with dwarfs that share similar traits but are not the same. Bilbo a a peaceful fellow. If not forced into this journey he would of lived the rest of his days in the shire, in his home in the hill. He has recently become more confident using his blade because of the confrontation of spiders while in the forest.
Bilbo is different from the other characters in the text because he is the only hobbit apart of this group. He also is does not share battle experiences that the war hardened dwarfs he travel with have. Bilbo also shares a different objective than the dwarves, he looks for adventure rather than riches. This character is similar to other characters we follow by being short, similar to the dwarves who are upwards of 5.7 where bilbo is only about 5.2.
This character had very little incentive to go on this journey but he took the challenge because he wanted something new in his life. Most of the time things that are difficult are the best experiences when finished. I like to take these kind of challenges.
Bilbo at the beginning had none of the dwarves respect. Only Gandalf knew his true full potential. But recently in the book Bilbo is gained the respect of the dwarves after he used the ring of power to save the dwarves from giant spiders. His alos evaded the elves after the dwarves are captured and is working on saving the dwarves. Thorin is starting to realize he needs the hobbit more than he thought.

The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien

The first portion of this book is focused mainly on Jimmy Cross, the lieutenant of his troop fighting in the war against Vietnam. He isn’t described physically exactly but we learn a lot about his values quickly. Other soldiers carry protection, photos of loved ones, artifacts, personal items, but Jimmy carried letters from a girl who he merely wished loved him. He’s a hopeless romantic who thinks too often of this girl. He eventually lets it consume him, to the extent of losing one of his soldiers.

Jimmy is a main focus, essentially just because he is Lieutenant. All of the other men in his troop are just as interesting and have their own stories to tell but the fact that he is still a flawed young man as a leader sets him apart. Most of these men have lovers, but Jimmy is not one to discuss. Martha is a secret, unlike the number of girlfriend gossip he’s heard from the others.

Relating to this character is significantly difficult as a fifteen year female student. However, I know what it’s like to feel unworthy of a high ranked role. Cross is supposed to be a strong, apathetic, concentrated leader with a whole troop on his hands, trying to win a war. I know how it feels to be overestimated and definitely feel unworthy or eligible for a rank. So when placed there I would struggle where Lt. Cross did, distraction would become more common like it did to him, I would freak out just as easy as him. God forbid but at times it can feel like your own ignorance can be the cause of a lost life.

Jimmy isn't quite seen as a rookie but he’s definitely not a professional. He makes many mistakes and can be seen as weak because of his tend to stay reserved. He wants to be a leader, and has general respect from the other men, but I wouldn’t call them friends. Some individuals in the group tend to outdo him in terms of personality or want to fight- Jimmy is simply too caught up in his thoughts for combat.

1. The book I'm reading is Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling. I just finished it a few days ago.

2. The character I chose is Neville Longbottom. He is described as a short and slightly pudgy kid who is clumsy and generally makes a lot of mistakes.

3. This character is different from other characters because he is just a goofy lovable character who actually isn't hugely involved in the plot.

4. I can relate to this character because Neville makes a lot of mistakes that can sometimes get him into trouble, like the time in which he wrote down the passwords to the Gryffindor dorms, accidentally letting an intruder in. I think everyone can say they've made mistakes that have led them to getting into trouble.

5. Neville's relations to the main characters are pretty good. The people who he doesn't have good relations with are the people from the Slytherin house who sometimes make fun of him. The potions professor Snape doesn't like Neville because he is a Gryffindor and does poorly in his class often.

1. What book are you reading and who is it by?
I am reading The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien

2. Choose one character. What is this character's name? What are some of his or her physical traits? Personality traits?
Okay well Bilbo Baggins is an interesting character, he's a hobbit, so he's small and hairy and walks barefoot. He is polite, likes his home and isn't the adventuring type.

3. What makes this character different from other characters in the text? Does this character have anything in common with other characters?
He's different from the other people he's traveling with because he would much rather be home. The allure of adventure doesn't really appeal to him.

4. Can you connect with this character on any level? How?
I can connect with this character because I like being in my house also

5. Talk about this character's relationship with other characters.
Well, Bilbo has known Gandalf since he was young, but Bilbo doesn't seem to have a close relationship with Gandalf or any of the dwarves.

1. Scott Pilgrim and the Infinite Sadness: Volume 3 by Bryan Lee O’Malley

2. Ramona Flowers has short hair that always gets changed every two weeks or so. She is very unique and has a very cool and exciting sense of style. She is funny but mysterious, we learn many new things about her which build up even more questions about her.

3. Ramona is a very interesting character. She is smarter than a lot of the characters and seems to have a lot more knowledge of the outside world. She also knows a lot more people rather than the other characters, who usually stay cooped up in their own neighborhood. Though she differs from a lot of characters, she fits in well. She is a very humorous character just like the rest of the cast, and seems to have similar music taste.

4. I can connect with Ramona on the way she likes to dress. Personally, I refrain from wearing boring clothes and I like to change up my outfit everyday. Ramona is the same this way. In the book you can see her outfits are different and exciting, rather than repetitive and boring.

5. Ramona is the girlfriend of the main character, Scott Pilgrim. With this, she is a very important character in the series. The series actually revolves around her and her “evil ex-boyfriends” that Scott has to battle. Though this sounds like a crazy plot, it fits well with the climate of the books that the series has created. The main characters seem quite fond of Ramona and they don’t have any problems with her. They all share laughs and have mutual feelings on everyone around them making their friendships grow stronger.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Mia has brown hair, enjoys classical music, plays the cello, is very hard working, and dreams big.

What makes her different for one is her hair. Her mom, dad, and little brother have blonde hair, but she's a brunette. She feels a bit like an outsider to her family. Her parents enjoy rock while she enjoys classical. What she does have in common is her love of music with everyone she knows.

I can connect because Mia wants to do a musical career, just like I do. She dreams of going to Juilliard, a school I have been looking into.

Even though at some points she feels like an outsider to her family, she is still very connected to them. She feels great pain when they die. Music is a big part of her life, and her friends/family are the same way. She uses other peoples music to explore, but always goes back to classical.

I am reading Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell.
The character I chose for this prompt is Eleanor. She has bright red hair, freckles and is heavier than most girls her age. This is what makes her stand out in the first chapter. From her perspective the author writes that everyone on the bus was staring at her on her first day of the 10th grade. She would get made fun of by other girls. One day after gym class, some girls played a mean prank on Eleanor. Two other girls were still in the locker room when Eleanor was cleaning up. She was able to make friends with them because they struggle with being made of for the same reason. Eleanor has only a few friends. One of them being Park. He helped her on the bus on the first day of school. They both grew feelings for each other and are in that awkward stage of “Hey I like you” and “Hey I like you too”. It’s funny how the author writes about this awkward relationship. I’m really enjoying this book and hopefully will finish it soon.

1.The Little Prince

By:Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

2."I had let my tools drop from my hands. Of what moment now was my hammer, my bolt, or thirst, or death? On one star, one planet, my planet, the Earth, there was a little prince to be comforted. I took him in my arms, and rocked him. "

This friendship with the prince inspires the narrator to be less selfish. When the narrator sees his friend is unhappy, he drops everything to comfort him. The narrator says that his hammer and bolt aren’t important compared to the prince’s grief, which is understandable—but he also says “thirst” and “death” aren’t as important either. He must really care about the prince!

3.I feel like the author in this book is believable and it has a lot of really good messenge that people can relate to them like about anytime of any ones life.

4. I can connect to this passage because i have my two best friends to do the same as the passage.

5. To be friend you have to be willing to let things go to be true friend.

2. The character name I choose was the main who is August. He's personality traits I guess are he's kind of naive and a very empathetic person I guess you could say. He's physical traits are hes is a little deformed from when he was born.
3. One major thing that separates this character from the rest is his appearance from the rest. One thing that he has in common with the rest is that he's a human and people around him don't treat him as a human sometimes because of the way he looks.
4. I mean just fact that he's been treated as a outcast and sometimes I guess I feel that way in some places that I go to.
5. So theres this kid named julian and he hates him I guess you could say because he's always trying to put him down. Jack and summer treat him as a normal person though they always try to cheer him up.

Title: The House On Mango Street
By: Sandra Cisneros

Non-Fiction
1. @
“My dad dreamed of having a big house and my dreamed of having a big kitchen, but it wasn’t expected it would be small in the new house we moved in.” Said Esperanza. It interested me because it was an amazing story about how they live on Mano Street. It makes me motivated on how reality is then expected.

2. The author is bias a little because she talks about her life living on Mango Street in a story, then putting her real family names. She talks about how the landlord didn’t fix her pipes, so they all moved to a one bedroom house they could afford. When her family has a small squished house Esperanza’s family has to share a bathroom, and backuard with neighbors before. Now she has a happy hard time with her family.

3. They moved away many times before they lived close to Esperanza’s old school. A nun from her old school came and asked where does she live? Esperanza pointed at her house and the nun said there? She got shocked and that kinda reminded me of how many times I moved. Every timed we moved the apartment got smaller and I could connect to Esperanza’s family.

4. I’ve learned big dreams can come true when you put effort in it. Esperanza was thinking of making a big office for her future job. To accomplish her things from school and her mom asked her where are you going to put it. Esperanza said at the corner and that’s how she was working hard to make things work with her family.

Title:Failure
By: Philip Schultz

2.
The Truth
You can hide it like a signature
or birthmark but it’s always there
in the greasy light of your dreams,
the knots your body makes at night,
the sad innuendos of your eyes,
whispering insidious asides in every
room you cannot remain inside.
....
It cannot be replaced with a house or a car,
a husband or wife, but can be ignored,
denied, and betrayed, until the last day,
when you pass yourself on the street
and recognize the agreeable life you
were afraid to lead, and turn away.

3. What I like about this piece of writing is how the author got my attention to read more because of his opening line “You can hide it like a signature”. He also describes everything to where the reader can visualize his point. I picked this section of the book because when reading it I was able to really think about what I just read and how I can maybe connect it to some part of my life.
4. A personal connection I can make about this poem is how some people don't want to admit the truth to them self and denied whatever is going on I know I've probably done it before. This Poem reminds me of how life is going to be for some people. We might not like what we do or admit that we do but that’s how it goes and we just have to admit it to ourselves at some point.
5. The type of literary device this poem had was imagery. I was able to think about “the greasy light” in my dreams. I was also able to think about a small room when the author says “ whispering insidious asides in every room you cannot remain inside”. What this was able to do for the poem is have readers create their own images and how they look at the story when reading.

NON-FICTION:
1. What book are you reading and who is it by?
Death by black hole by Neil Degrasse Tyson

2. Copy a short passage that you found to be interesting in your text. Explain what made this passage interesting for you?
“When scientifically investigating the natural world, the only thing worse than a blind believer is a seeing denier.”

3. Do you feel like this author is believable? Does he/she write with any bias? Explain.
The author is a scientist, not a hack. He uses real sources from real people and real astronomers. I know that in his books he has no bias because he is teaching science of astrophysics, not politics or anything like that.

4. What connections can you make to this text? What does this text remind you of?
The quote reminds me of politics and "flat earther's" if that makes any sense. They make claims all the time usually not backed by any evidence. When they see evidence against there claims they usually denny it.

5. Explain one thing that you've learned so far that you have not already mentioned.
black holes are so dense that all the matter that they are made of is compact into what we call a Schwartz child radius. the largest black hole we know of is so dense that while being the same size as our sun, it still contains the mass of 40 billion suns!

3. Do you feel like this author is believable? Does he/she write with any bias? Explain. I do feel like this author is believable because this is a true story and I don't think people would make up stuff about a story like this. The author does not talk with a bias at all because its a play

4. What connections can you make to this text? What does this text remind you of? All of the very messed up stuff that has been going on recently it's a very good connection to this book. It reminds me of the shooting at the gay club.

5. Explain one thing that you've learned so far that you have not already mentioned. I learned how unfair it was to this boy and to his family that me got brutally beaten to death.

Spend this reading log talking about one character in depth.

I'm reading Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling.

Hermione Granger, a close friend to Harry Potter and the smartest one in the trio. She is quite short compared to everyone, she also has red hair and was born from parents who weren't wizards/witches making her half-muggle. She is very panicky, especially when it comes to her grade and she tends to brag about her intelligence.

She is the smartest person in the school. Many teachers admire her and wish that everyone was like her. Understanding in every way and does not get bored from lessons. She is pretty clueless about what is going on like the rest. She has some trouble knowing when to be quiet as well.

I overreact to many little things. I'm always worried about how people think of me and Hermione isn't that different. Every little mistake she makes she glazes over and over until she is overwhelmed making her feel worse. She doesn't realize that its bad. I'm not good at managing panic. I will panic about the littlest thing like leaving early.

People try to become friends with her so they can get help with their homework. She refuses to let in, but that won't stop her from helping Ron and Harry. She doesn't like the same people that Harry and Ron don't like and she only really cares about her closest friends and teachers.

The book I am reading is called the Beast of Noor by Stacy Lee Carey. In the book the character that I chose is called miles. Miles is a tall 15 year old boy that has black hair and is a little bit pale. Miles is a smart person in the book he is able to remember lots of healing spells and types of herbs, he is always looking to learn more about that stuff. What makes miles different is that he is training to become a healer for his village which no other person is doing.

I can connect to miles because he likes to practice his skill of healing and he does it like everyday, and the same goes with me I love to work on my soccer skills and I train hard to perfect them.

Miles has two sisters but one died from the beast of noor but other than that his family is small he only has one sister and a mom.

The character that I chose was Santiago the shepard and is the book's protagonist. He is a young a young and adventurous Andalusian boy. He doesn't have any physical features that was described in the book.Santiago is different than other characters because he follows his heart and his passions not like many other people in the world and like other people he wants the treasures in life and wants money and love like everyone else. I connect with character because I want to follow my dreams and not live a life that not want to live because Santiago in this book his parents wanted him to be a priest but he did what his heart told him, and I want to follow m heart like him. In the book and where I am in it he is just meeting strangers and not having a relationships because it is only one time meetings but the only people that he has a relationship with is the raven haired girl that is the daughter of the merchant who he had fallen in love with and his parents who wanted him to be a priest he has a good relationship with them because even though the parents didn't want him to be a Shepard they were accepting of what he wanted to do and respected that he wanted to follow his dream. Plus his parents gave him golden coins for food and to buy his flock

By Malala Yousafzal and Christina Lamb
The main character in my story is Malala Yousafzal she is very brave and isn´t afraid. When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education. On Tuesday October 9, 2012, she almost paid the ultimate price.
