Play Reading Log #4: Due Jan. 23

1/17/2019

Read: Pages 129- 155 in Stuart Brown's Play

In the assigned reading, do the following:
1. QUOTE: Choose one quote from the section about Play at Work that strikes you as interesting, true, or connected to you and your life. Type this quote out in your log, along with what page it is on (in MLA format).

2. TEXT TO SELF: In this section, we get to see some different jobs and where play is in their jobs. What kind of job do YOU think that you could go into in the future that you would find playfulness and joy in? In what way do you think you'd be able to find playfulness in this job? Think about all the possibilities of a job that would have play in it--the type of people who you'd probably work with, the environment you would work in, the type of tasks that you would be doing in this job. Explain thoroughly how the way you play NOW could be present in this job in the future.

3. COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING: In these pages, we learn about why we lose play, and he gives some ideas about how to get it back. Summarize these sections with the parts that most resonated with you that still answers the questions: Why do we lose play? How do we get it back? Explain why these parts stood out to you the most.

You should respond to at least one other students' Play Reading Log #4 by 11:59pm on January 24th.

Response Requirements:
Your response should be a minimum of 3 sentences and should comment on what the original poster said, connecting it to your own life or other things in our society and the world. Your response can also push the original poster by posing further questions.

PS. I'll be contributing to this as well so you can read my log as an example!

QUOTE: “Their dark humor often helps them cope with the inherent dangers of their work.”

TEXT TO SELF: I think I could go into being a firefighter, because I know a lot of them and they all have the same dark sense of humor as me and they seem to think I’d make a pretty good firefighter. Helping people always makes me happy and that job is full of helping people. In fact, that’s all you do. I would pull practical jokes there and make jokes to keep me from being afraid all the time.

COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING: We are “pushed and pulled away from play” when we decide to get serious about everything. In one paragraph, the author talked about how even doctors, the people with one of the most serious jobs, can be humorous and use it in there jobs in a good way, and how it can create a connection between the patient and the doctor. It also goes along with the saying laughter is the best medicine.

You truly do Bear and because of that I think you would make a excellent firefighter because of your jokes that would make someone feel better in a instant when something bad happens to them and great Text to self.

I agree that laughter is the best medicine. once my dog akela got ran over by a car and i was so shocked i couldn't feel any emotions. my family was so sad and so were my family's friends when we told them that night because everybody loved him. we had to bury him, while we were burying him i was trying hard to cheer people up, the only thing that worked was when i made people laugh especially my brothers. so i personalty think it is important to laugh and play every day.

I could totally see you doing this job in the future. You always know how to lighten the mood by joking around and making certain things not seem so bad anymore. I also love that you brought up how the most serious jobs like being a doctor or surgeon can incorporate humor which strengthens the bond between the doctor and the patient. In fact, my doctor always likes to make jokes with me which strengthens our bond.

As soon as I saw your quote I knew I should reply to your comment. I chose the same quote and honestly, I think being a firefighter would suit you and your personality. I'm also glad that you'd want a job because you like helping people. I feel the same way about everyone because the feeling of helping people just makes my day, so its great that you're like that too.

I can relate to your quote a lot because I use dark humor a lot. About being a firefighter I don't think I would want to do it. Even though everyone has the same sense of humor it wouldn't be fun at all for me.

QUOTE:
"Can play at work itself be useful, though? I would argue that it is essential." (Brown, 129)

TEXT TO SELF:
I have always been a person who tries out new things. Some of those things catch my interest, some turn out to be extremely boring. I judge this by seeing if I am still having fun and that I still consider it as play. If it has become a job, it is clearly not very fun. One future job that I hope holds true to being both fun and financially stable, is an aerospace engineer. I am very interested in space and the thought of creating new things to break barriers. Since the world is getting more and more intrigued by what space could offer, it seem fitting that being an aerospace engineer would meet my requirements. I am hoping that the job is more than just a desk job, and that it is more hands on, but I will just have to wait and see.

COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING:
This section talks about how adults and even kids are constantly being pulled away from playing. Many people say that some jobs are just too serious to have any joking around associated with it. This could be anything from a police officer to a surgeon. Brown goes into how play can actually build a bond between doctor and patient or act as a coping measure for people in the police force or army. The way that we lose play is that people assume that play is bad. They try to make everything about money and the struggles of life instead of how we can make life more fun. The way we make incorporate play back into work is to first realize that there is more to life than work.

QUOTE: "If our team loses we may feel down, but there is always a next game, a next season." pg 133

TEXT TO SELF: I have always said something like this to my teammates if we lose a game we can try again next time. I always loved playing sports with my friends and teammates, but sometimes when we lose, our competitive side comes out to help us win the game but even if we lose we are all support each other because we are a team that sticks together and never breaks, but if I had a job to encourage others and say " Everything will be alright, we got the next game easy." then I would take that job, but hopefully encouraging someone could do something financial as well as make people happy. I want to be a Veterinarian because helping animals when they are in need is a fun thing to do because most animals are strays and have no home and either get in the pound or starve to death but I hope I can help animals and become financially stable.

COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING: This Part talks about how it doesn't matter if you lose but there is always a next time for everything with sports or competition. If you ever lose play which is impossible because everything is play but When we lose we get the feeling to give up easily if we don't like it but try giving it a chance or try again because if you try and try you can achieve anything you set your mind to it.

The interests of play
How do you loose play? You loose play when you forget to stop and smell the roses. When you focus only on work you stress and stress and stress. Then you have this empty void inside of yourself. You lose sight on the simple things so don’t take play for granted. We push away from play and we also pull ourselves towards it. We want it but we consider it immature when in reality it is not as a matter of fact it should be considered mature to play. To acknowledge that play is important. So if it i so important than our body must be subconsciously trying to get it back. Well it scientists believe that exercise has a way of getting past that mental wall of “maturity” as some people might think. Those exercises can help get you out of depression and a path that may lead to depression. Play is so important and it can even help you keep calm. On page 129 I kept coming back to this chapter. One line that really stuck with me was “Their dark humor helps them cope with the dangers of their job.” In this quote they are talking about police officers and firefighters who continually risk their lives for others. Imagine if they didn’t have that type of play to help them cope. They would be freezing on the spot. I know for a fact that sometimes in very serious situations or mainly after I will crack a joke to break the tension from the conversation. Though some might consider it rude, I don’t do it often but when I do it is to only try to help others cope as well as myself. I don’t like to see people sad though I may act indifferent I do care when people are sad or need support. So to summarise all of this play is in everything. You can’t escape it, it is in everyday things, jogging, dating, humor, sports, reading, school, games… It is in many mature things as well. To have many attributes to attract a crush or impress. Deep down we are still all mammals that belong to the wild in a way. Being a player. Whatever floats your boat means that you are most likely playing. That is what this chapter is speaking of when they say all these things. Play is everywhere so take care to notice and enjoy it.

I agree with your comment about the dark humor. Sometimes I will crack a joke too at rough times, and sometimes it works but sometimes it doesn't. It makes me uncomfortable when other people are really sad around me and I either become really awkward and don't know how to help them cope, or I will just make a joke and ruin and/or brighten the tone.

1. Quote: "If play is so necessary to our work, why we lose it? The answer is that we are both pushed and pulled away from play. As we get serious about career, get married, have a family, move up the ladder at work, take care of parents, take part in community and religious duties, and work out to stay in shape to stay in shape and prevent health problems, we feel we are inexorably pulled away from any time for personal play." Pg.144

2. Text To Self: I definitely seethes everyday in my own home, but the only difference I see between not having enough time to play is my parents time Vs. my siblings time to play. My parents are always doing something productive on top of their jobs. The only time I see them play is when we go out to an amusement park as a family. My siblings on the other hand have jobs as well, but they are always finding time to play video games, sports, or any mobile play. There is a huge difference, but I definitely do see how people can have little or no time for play.

3. Comprehension and summarizing: In the passage I read it explains the reasons we lose play is because we simply are occupied with what is considered more important task than play leading up to almost no time for play. Some ways to get it back is to incorporate play into your task during the right time. This really stood out to me because it is true to lose play to time management. Te only question I have is how do professional sports player look at playing like it is work or it is play with pay?

QUOTE: “Can play at work itself be useful, though? I would argue that it is essential.” (Brown, 129)

TEXT TO SELF: In my opinion, play is an important factor to make certain jobs more interesting and fun. Some people may think that play is dangerous and not professional to incorporate in serious jobs like doctors/surgeons, officers, firefighters, etc... I would argue that play is essential for jobs in order to enjoy them. One job that I want to do is to be a psychologist. I have been thinking about this job for a while and to see if I could incorporate play in it and that it would be a good job financially. I am still unsure of which area of psychology I want to work in. It depends which area I have more success in and is more interesting. Psychology is better financially and I would enjoy this particular job because, I love helping others and listening to their problems. I found this job really interesting because my aunt is currently doing this job and she took me to her office one time and I did sand therapy with her and realized that this job is fun and interesting to get into. One thing that I do right now that can be present in this future job is art. If I want to do Art therapy, this could be useful.

COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING: We are losing play by getting serious about work and moving up the ladder at work. We can always get back the sense of play in work. We can start getting it back by movement of any sort (exercise) or playing with pets or children. To really regain play is to visualize and remember the past and create different plays that work for your present life. One section that really stood out to me was the section about Barbara Brannen’s book, The Gift of Play: Why Adult Woman Stop Playing and How to Start Again. She describes how her heart play was outdoor activities while her husbands heart play was indoor activities. She realized that her husbands heart play wasn’t the same as hers and that she had to act on that to experience her heart play and incorporate it in her work. This section was very interesting for me read because, even though she liked to spend time with her husband, she realized that she needed some time for her own experience of true play and infused that excitement in her work.

Quote:
"Sometimes when a situation is really heading south, a moment of imaginative play is the only thing that provides enough distance to see the way out of predicament" (Brown, 131).

Text to Self:
I haven't thought a ton about what I want my future career to be, but being a lawyer or jobs where I would be convincing other people being sounds fun to me. By being a lawyer I could find play in arguing my case in court, because at home I'm always finding the littlest things to argue with my family about. For me being a lawyer would be fun because I'd have to use my creativity and logic to make other people see what I see.

Comprehension and Summarize:
We learn that a lot of times adults are limited with play. Most jobs and careers today, pressure adults to be the best and have laser focus. When really, adults need to play too. It deprives them of happiness and leads them to not knowing what they're job is all about. Though it sounds hard, having a job you truly love will not deprive you of play. Likewise, children need play initially. Play is important for kids growth. Some grow with lack of play. This can lead to an insecure adulthood. Parents can simply let their child explore and be creative outside to prevent this. I chose these examples, because I know many adults who say they're gonna work till they drop and there's no point. It's saddening that they can't find a job that will fulfill their happiness and financial stance. Similarly, many kids don't play because of bad parenting or other responsibilities. Everyone of any age should not be limited to play.

QUOTE: “Production matters now, but creativity is the source of all growth – the new products, New techniques, new Services, and new solutions to all the problems that Mark the difference between a company that will thrive and one that will soon be deader and the eight track tape”. 134

TEXT TO SELF: This makes sense to me because I think the world is developing in new ways every second and by the time I graduate highschool and im in college, I'm sure jobs will be so much more different than now and it will change the world for better or for worse. In the future I think there will be lots of technology that will solve problems that we can’t solve today and I also think a company in the future will not have to work as hard because there will be a lot more things to help with the struggles we have to today. For example, I think there will be a lot of robots to do work humans can’t and there will be a lot more machines to do things for humans too. In the future I think technology will have the greatest impact and the biggest change from now.

COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING: I feel like as us human beings we never lose play. Play will always be apart of us whether we like it or not. There are times when we don't want to play and we aren't in the mood, but over all we can be playing just looking at something we like. This part of the book was really good and descriptive I really liked it. It had a lot of meaning towards the learning outcomes of play.

I agree that that the world is forever changing. We like to think that we can plan for the future and that all will go "according to plan", but that is just not something we have control over. All we can ever do is adapt for the better. I also wrote about how, as adults, we never lose play. It is just masked by society and we believe everything they say, because we don't want to be left behind.

QUOTE: "Their dark humor often helps them cope with the inherent dangers of their work" (Brown, 129)

TEXT TO SELF: If I could choose any job that I think I'd have fun in is acting, if I were to be good at it. I've always dreamt about being an actress and how fun it'd be even though my mom told me stories about who I'd be dealing with and the environment I'd be working in. My mom said that everyone would be so stuck up and just very hostile. But, I've seen many more people's experiences and I feel like working with the right people and making new connections and just having fun with it would be a lot better.

COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZATION: From what I got from the reading the text, I think we are losing play because we prioritize other things that are "more important" causing us to push aside our play. People now should realize that they need to have more fun in life and realize that play is just as important as getting what they think is more important "done." As a self example, I don't even remember the last time I took time for myself to play. I seek thrill and I haven't done that in awhile, meaning it can be very bad for me. That is why I think play is really important because even I sometimes forget to and it isn't doing me any good and imagining other people that haven't played in maybe years sort of concerns me.

I agree 100% when you said that we pretty much have the wrong priorities. Play is an important part of our lifestyle and a lot of people these days are just worried about making money and doing their jobs to support their family. They forget that while doing those things they can still have fun.

QUOTE: "If our team loses we may feel down, but there is always a next game, a next season." pg 133

TEXT TO SELF: I disagree with this personally because I am a very competitive and am disappointed to lose. One time when I was playing football my team was wining 7-0 and it was the last quarter and my coach moved me from tight end to blocking back and then our quarterback had no open option to pass to so he threw a pick six and we ended up losing the game and I was very grudge full about the whole situation.

Quote:
"Creative people know the rules of the game, but they are open to improvisation and serendipity" (Brown, 136).

Text to Self:
A job that could involve play is a party/wedding planner. When I was younger, I thought that this would be a fun job to do. You can find playfulness in this job by coming up with creative ways to pick a theme for the party or wedding. I would have to work people of all different ages; if I was planning a party for a kid, then I would have to work with him/her to bring their vision to life. If I was working with a couple for a wedding, I would have to work with them to make their wedding beautiful. I plan a lot of things that I do now, so I would enjoy this job and the challenges it includes.

Comprehension and Summarizing:
We lose play when we stress and take everything too seriously. We lose play when we don't think of creative ways to think of solutions, or don't use our imagination throughout the job. The opposite of play is depression; we need to play in order to be happy. To gain this back, we need to use our creativity. This is a common quality that work and play have. When we lose this quality, play is no longer there.

I can definitely see you being a wedding/party planner. Every time we hang out, you've already planned it all since it just comes naturally to you. You will also need to have a lot of empathy to know what your customers are envisioning. I also think that comes naturally to you.

Quote: ¨Can play at work be useful, though? I would argue that it is essential.¨

Text to self: I both agree and disagree with this statement. There has to be at least a few instances of play during work, but if you're working part-time, I don't think much play is necessary. I think that if you're working a full-time, nine-to-five job, play is needed; but when you're not working full days, I don't see it having quite the same effect.

Comprehension and Summarizing: Physical play is one of the ways that you can retain play attributes. Getting out and active after what could have been years of no play, is a good way to regain your playful spirit.

Quote: ''If play is so necessary to our work, why do we lose it?'' Page: 144

Text to Self: I guess I lose playtime with i do things around the house, so when I do it I’m so focused on getting it done I just don’t play. A job that could have playfulness is a video game designer. It may be stressful to create that game but the playful part comes when you play the game you created. this job could have me working with other game designers and I will work in a office of some can and play games. I play a lot of video games at home and it can go into this job.

Comperhension & Summarizing: In the passage it says that we lose playtime because we are too occupied with what we consider a way more important task. This stood out to me cause I have lost play to something i’m doing because i thought it was just more important. We could get it back but trying to incorporate it into our work by incorporating it at the right time. This stood out to me cause it is true that for work you can incorporate it with what your working on by doing it at the right time.

The passage didn't focus on losing play due to lack of seeing it's importance; it mainly focused on losing play due to peer pressure and the instability to possibly be embarrassed. Do you ever turn cleaning into a game or try to see how fast you can do it?

QUOTE : As with many things in life, often the problem is not the problem, the problem is how you react to the problem. (Brown 130)

TEXT TO SELF : I think this quote applies to all of the careers out there, it's how we react and how we face it that matters. You may face a difficult decision, but there's always a way to solve it, it's just if you are willing to try or not. I want to be a surgeon in the future, I know that this will be a hard and tough road, during med school the professors will teach us the procedures and what to do if and error occurs, but in real life we cannot predict the errors precisely, for example when it could happen or what could happen while in operation. We may face rare complications, but we shouldn’t give up easily, we should look for any and every possible outcomes to help the patient.

COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING : We lose play when we get serious, when we think we have more and more responsibilities. There is no easy way to get play back, you can’t just snap your fingers and want to get play back, it takes time. Play is like your friend, you lose it by slowly forgetting it and not contacting it, so if you want to get it back you have to try and familiarizing with then.

QUOTE: "When the going gets tough, the tough go play. Talk to firefighters or police officers and they will tell you that joking around, razzing one another, and practical jokes are just part of the job." (Brown 129)

TEXT TO SELF: If a firefighter doesn't joke around or play with his co-workers, he will start to dwell on the fact that he could die at any moment. I experience a much less lethal version of this during piano recitals. In my piano class, there is a lot of talking, joking, and laughing going on, so it keeps you from being nervous about messing up; during a recital though, you have none of that. There is no playful atmosphere, so I get really worried about messing up, which makes me mess up.

COMPREHENSION AND COMMENTARY: This section of the book focuses on two things: what happens when you lose a playful environment, and how to incorporate play into your work life. I already discussed the basics of what happens when you lose a playful environment, but I have yet to cover the second topic. You can incorporate play into your work life by playing around and suggesting fun ideas during brainstorms, imagining what someone smarter than you would do, or just having fun.

QUOTE: "If our team loses we may feel down, but there is always a next game, a next season." pg 133

TEXT TO SELF: I agree with this quote because I’m a competitive athlete and when I lose I sometimes get kind of mad and upset but I always realize that there is always another event that I can redeem myself. Even when my placing goes down I always say “theres always a next season”. It is one of those things that is really upsetting but when I lose I don’t take it as I’m a loser I take it more as that I can improve. Because of my perspectives I believe a good job for me would be a shaper or carpenter. In both jobs you fail a lot and you have to learn to make mistakes and how to process them to make something better. Also, in both jobs you have to have a “anything is possible” mindset.

COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING: This section is all about how failing can lead to success and that when you fail there will always be a next time. When we fail sometimes we get the feeling that we’re not good enough and we feel that we are losers but we aren't, we are just either having a bad day or are not to your full potential. Anything is possible if you set your mind to it.

Quote: As with many things in life, often the problem is not the problem, the problem is how you react to the problem. (Brown, 130)

Text to Self: I have always wanted to be an illustrator/ writer since I was a kid, I have always found joy in creating new worlds and wacky characters. Although the environment in this kind of job can be very competitive and stressful, and the process of writing or illustrating a comic can take months to be done correctly with a professional end product. I have even been working on stories upwards of 2 years for a comic, so I have already had a little bit of experience and know that it is one of my favorite things to do, especially when the end product makes other people laugh.

Comprehension and Summarizing: We loose play as we become adults, gaining and fulfilling responsibilities, as said in the text ¨We are pushed and pulled away from play¨(Brown, 144) People get play back through different kinds of humor as adults. In the text it describes how even when an adult has a serious job like being part of the police force, or being a doctor, they still incorporate play through humor. People still manage to play even when they had harsh responsibilities by incorporating a sense of humor and entertainment into their jobs.

A quote that I found interesting is “The beauty of sports is that it embraces the paradox of seriousness and play we really care if the Patriots or the Eagles won the game and at the same time realize that it is just a game if our team loses we may feel down Pg:133

In medicine I feel I would do play and be serious at the same time how I would playfulness in this job is by making experiments because I find that fun and working with other is also fun for me. The type of people I would like to work with is people who already have experience in it and the we get along. How I play now could help with this later by because playing and I play soccer or basketball with my friends sometimes and playing is healthy for people because there exercising and in medicine it about making people healthy.

How we lose play is by because we are both pushed and pulled from it and since people are working and taking care of family somethings they can’t find play for themselves but how they get but to play is by they will ask if that’s all in lives and think back and also say what can I expect for the rest of my life and these parts stood out the most to me because I didn’t know jobs can pull you out of play.

1. QUOTE: "More important, the CEO's playful invitation to take shots at him said that it was okay to have some setbacks and that it was okay to admit failures, take the hit, and figure out ways to fix them" (Brown, 131).

2. TEXT TO SELF: I love teaching. During my and Skyler's wedding, my dad told a story about how when I was little, I used to line up all my stuffed animals and dolls and teach them in my bedroom. My parents and grandparents would sneak up to my door and watch me teaching. They knew, even when I was young, that I'd grow up to love this profession. However, I didn't always know this. I thought I was destined for a life in theatre--something that I still also do to this day. While I was teaching with those animals, I was also playing pretend. I was acting the part of the teacher, and I was making up their lines as well as mine since they couldn't actually talk. I think that when I was a kid, I was doing both these professions already: teaching, and acting. Nowadays, I feel very playful at work and when I'm creating something, be it food, art, or theatre. Where I feel most playful is when I'm traveling and learning about the world. I know this sounds strange, but one day, I think I'll take a break from teaching and doing theatre and try on life as a flight attendant. I think I'd be good at it and I love to travel and to meet new people!

3. COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING: In this section, there is a part where the author has a conversation with someone who tells him, "You're being irresponsible telling people to play. What are you, a hippie?" (Brown, 146). This part really struck me because I feel like I get asked this a lot when I talk to friends who are stuck in the grind at work and I ask them how they play! I feel very fortunate to work in an environment where I can feel playful, and where I can have a back and forth joking banter with student and colleagues. I feel like we lose play because of just what this person told our author. We grow up and we are told to take things more seriously. I think that play, in its own quirky way, can be very serious. We can do better at our jobs and be happier in our lives if we are allowed to play.

TEXT TO SELF: I like this quote because I think my dads boss told him some thing like this quote. but also I can relate this quote with the roller coaster project. The roller coaster project was quite a challenging project but I think we resolved our problems well probably with some imaginative play involved.

COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING: I think that play was forced out of our lives because of work, people telling us its childish, and finances. what I think we should do to bring play back into our lives is to understand that not evryone is okay with the vicious cicle of nonstop work. infact probably nobody does. so I think if w know that evryone is differet and that we all have different personalities.

Quote: “Can play at work itself be useful, though? I would argue that it is essential.” (Brown, 129)

Text to self: I believe play is essential in all aspects of life. In work spaces, with kids or adults, in school and everywhere. In dark times you could say that It could help people feel better about situations or at least know that its still okay to be happy. When people are down in the dumps if they have good friends their friends would help them out and try to make them smile or at least lighten the mood. They could make a joke or bring up something in the past that was fun to get things off their mind. It really helps sometimes and can prevent things like suicide or self harm. That's why play is essential in all situations, even if it gets a little out of hand in classes or even work places. That brings another subject to mind that kids shouldn't get in trouble for playing and not paying attention, at least not much because they cant be afraid of play when teachers or adults are around, and especially not their parents.

Comprehension and summarizing: I think we lose play when we get too serious about our jobs, homework, and even status. We want to be looked at as "cool" and not run around playing dungeons and dragons the old fashion way, or we might feel much too busy to play with friends or have too much work at our job and be powered by when your next pay check is. You could even simply think you've grown out of those "childish things", and or don't feel like playing. All of these things could take play away. I believe though when you are feeling trapped or under stress, remember that play can help, weather its in an introverted way by giving yourself you time and binging your favorite show, playing your favorite video games, or going and spending time with loves ones and going out and doing activities. Its always helped me when I need to do something fun when I'm packed full of work and stress.

QUOTE: “Talk to firefighters or police officers and they will tell you that joking around, razzing one another, and practical jokes are just part of the job. Their dark humor often helps them cope with the inherent dangers of their work.” (Brown, 129)

TEXT-TO-SELF: For me, I could see myself in the line of work in serving the community and saving lives, just as firefighters do. I look at that quote and think about the stresses would come my way if I were to pursue the career path I want to go down. Working in a hospital means that there are sicknesses and deaths all around you, but I still feel there can be joy. The moment when you a patient recover with your care of them would be quite rewarding. If I were to work in the pediatric recovery ward I would get to work with children through play I would be getting them back to their normal life at least attempt to live normally. I find myself enjoying studying a topic that fit my interests which will help me in college and med school.

COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING: In this section, we learn that we lose players and the time for play when we stop taking the time to enjoy the world. When we focus on the stress of the world and get sucked into to the never-ending duties of life. We learn that play and work are not mutually exclusive just that work takes the time that would be used so you need to take the initiative to plan your time for indulgences. What stood out to me was the relatability in this section of the text, although I don’t have a full-time job. My commitment to school often leaves me with little free time as I am invested with my learning and I could really see someone speaking where others are coming from. I could also relate when they talk about societies pressure on your ability to give up play. We get told when things are too childish and get judged for it.

QUOTE: “During brainstorming, the group should focus on quantity of ideas rather than quality. In fact, one of the basic rules of the process is that ‘quality’ of an idea isn’t considered at all. All judgment or evaluation of the ideas is put on hold. No one is knocked for what seems to be off-the-wall or crazy suggestions, and there are no brainstorming mistakes. Sorting through the ideas to figure out the ‘good’ ones will come later.” (Brown 138)

TEXT TO SELF:
How this can apply to me is when doing something where I want to get the best answer on things. Sometimes it’s good to look at the quantity of things, because then that’s where brainstorming gets started. When brainstorming, even if you have ten ideas that might not be really helpful, you can always build onto them and make them the best version they can be. It’s the same with assignments. Maybe I’ll have one writing assignment that is due and I will have to brainstorm. In this brainstorming process, I might think of many ways to describe what I’m writing about and then pick one of the ways and improve on that.

COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING:
I actually think that this quote is really interesting and when you think about it, their concept makes a lot of sense. I usually hear people say, when talking about things they make or things they buy, “quality over the quantity.” In this quote, they are showing a good example of focusing on the quantity instead of the quality. They’re saying that when someone gives a suggestion or an idea to think about, they won’t focus on if it’s ‘good,’ because what they’re saying is that there is no such thing as a ‘brainstorming mistake.’ So they are finding the value in everyone's unique point of view.

How play I have now can be used in play in the future is how I just joke around. I feel like this can be in any job because jokes are just made with your imagination so it could be about anything.

Comprehension & Summarizing: It resonated with me when it said we lose play once we start to always being serious. I agree with this because whenever I become really serious for a certain task I forget about the play aspect around it. It resonated with me when it talked about just doing any physical activity could help. TEXT TO SELF: Well at the moment I want to be a psychologist in the future. The quote that I picked will be a good thing to take into consideration, for the job. If someone is in a bad place to make them or try to think about creative things or imagination. Distract them from the negative things in the world or what is happing in their life. To find that to brainstorm what makes them happy a place, thing, a person, or an activity, the environment would be comfortable colorful space to feel free.

COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING: I feel that we lose play by being dis by the busy things in life, or feelings that we have. People can be depressed or happy and not think about the other things we need. Like Brown said “we get married and have a family..’’. Then some people who do tha and lack of play don't pass it on. How we can regain is by bonding with people kids, they can really help you regain the interest of play.

TEXT TO SELF: A job category I think I’m interested in is the medical field. This area has interested me for a long time, but I don’t know exactly what I would like to be. You can involve play in this area with your patients. Calm them down and tell them jokes or tell a story. I’m not certain what specific job in this area I would like to work in. As I grow older and time passes I will certainly know. We will see in the future.

COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING: As we grow older and mature play in our life decreases and starts to disappear. We are more serious about our job and many other things in life. We start to distance ourselves from play. One way to regain play back into your life is by taking a journey back into the past to help create avenues for play that work for you in the present as the author stated. Quote: On page 131, it states that “Whenever i’m stuck, I try to imagine what someone smarter than me would do, then I do that.” What in my opinion is true is that this quote is basically my middle school mindset in a nutshell cause I would go to a teacher and I would try my best to get the answer out of them before I actually tried to do it.

Text to Self: A job that I would honestly enjoy a lot is actually my father's job because in my opinion it is actually a lot of fun for me to figure out stuff like quick math or figure out what kind of shirt the client wants. Also, with my fathers job since he is the only person has to work at his job he can take his job all over the world as long as he has a computer or some sort of thing with internet which is really cool and very convenient. If I hopefully get this job, I will try to make it as big as it can get and get #1.

Comprehension & Summarizing: Well one of the parts that resonated well with me is when they were talking about kids and adolescents being so attracted to their work. I feel like that part actually gave me a good surprise to realize that I was doing that a lot of the time in elementary school and for a good part in middle school, just caring about my work and my work only. Also, In one of the parts on how to get it back I like how I had to refer back on my past about that and how I can maybe do some more sports and be more active on the field.

Quote: "If our team loses we may feel down, but there is always a next game, a next season.

I can relate to this because throughout the years that I’ve been playing soccer there have been many losses but there is always another game or tournament that will happen again. I think that when you make mistakes as a team it helps you grow and become stronger. There are always times that when you lose you feel down or upset but to me that’s only because you care so much about the game and making an impression. I tend to feel like that after games all the time because I know that I could have done better or that there are things that I need for work on. Although feeling down and then playing more games always made me feel better because I knew I had time to grow.

Just because you’ve lost doesn’t mean that you should give up. There will always be another game and another opportunity to try again. Giving up doesn’t help you become a stronger player or team, it just shows that you aren’t willing to take a challenge and keep going even though you may have lost

"When the going gets tough, the tough go play." This quote from page 129 struck me because I really agree with it.

Text To Self: A job I can really see myself in, is opening up a dog shelter. I love dogs so much, and I have never been sad around one. they always bring a smile to my face, and I feel like in this job the quote can't apply because the going will never get tough. I love playing with dogs, and I will be able to do that in the future if my plan goes through. I would get to work with dogs all day, and other dog lovers like me. The environment would be my own creation which would make it so much better. There would be bright outdoors but also cozy warm rooms. And no dos would be in cages. If a dog is going through a rough time, they would go into their own room if they are attacking other dogs. But no cages unless the dog likes it.

Comprehension and summarizing: Even adolescents, who have a jam packed schedule of school work, homework, after-school activities... They too suffer the same crisis." This quote in the text on page 145 stood out to me because it reminded me of my friend on my cheer team.. he get's up at 3:00 am for his Starbucks job, so he has time for practice 5-6 days a week, and college. Sometimes he get's frustrated, but me and him play Pokemon on our switch before practice starts. I think that helps him get through the day sometimes. We also have in n out Thursday, where after practice we go out to eat.

You related your quote to the work force really nicely. Also, your Text to Self part explained who you are and what you’d like to do when you’re older very well. I could definitely see you opening a dog shelter.

QUOTE: I know my quote is almost one of the first ones but I really liked this quote. "I realized that sometimes people don't want to be part of the decision-making process." (pg. 129) Carl

TEXT TO SELF: A job that would be "fun and playful" is traveling to take photos (photography) because theirs a lot of cool places in the world. There are lots of fun places on the earth that every person can enjoy and play. Most likely you wouldn't really work with someone because your traveling for photography not for an office.

COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING: When it comes to deciding for people sometimes you are afraid to get judged on your decision. So its hard to make decisions. That's why people don't want to be part of making decisions its also hard to make up your mind. The quote stood out to me because it is a real world problem for people. We loose play by becoming older and not wanting the strong urge to play. Sometimes people get play back when they have kids or when they see a play activity happen then they want to join.

This comment is cool to see because my mom has the same mindset as you. She loves to travel and she loves her camera a lot. She loves her job and you did yearbook and I've seen you take pictures before so good luck to you.

I agree with you that photography would be fun. It would also be very creative. How is the way you play now connected to how you will play while being a photographer?

"If our team loses we may feel down, but there is always a next game, a next season." pg 133

I agree with this quote because i am a very competitive athlete and sometimes I get super competitive and forget that its fun. I want to play soccer professionally one day and I believe that I can get myself to that point with the working the effort. I have been doing this for years now and these are the years I'm really going to grind and get better as a person and also a player. All in all, I hate losing and I'm a very competitive athlete.

I tend to get really competitive from actually playing sports to even games like fifa, nba2k, and madden. Against friends, family, and also strangers. Its just the type of person i've always been. The person who wants to be the best at what they do.

1. QUOTE: “Whenever I’m stuck, I try to imagine what someone smarter than me would do, and then I do that.” (Brown,131).

2. TEXT TO SELF: This quote really struck me, because I do this all the time. Whenever I'm confronted with a big emotion, I try to remember some inspirational quotes (that my parents have given me over the years, or that I have read). For example: when I'm mad at someone, I remember to take a deep breath. And never take anything personally. For the most part, I think a lot about what I say before saying it. My mom always tells me that “it's not what you say it's how you say it.” I feel, that when you are inspired by someone smarter than you, it makes you smarter. That does not make complete sense, but I’m hoping you got it.

3. COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING: The author talked a lot about how exercise can be a great vehicle to get yourself back on the path of play. I completely agree that exercise can clear your head. Exercise makes it easier to focus, and make it easier to play. I can remember one night where I was very depressed. Not really knowing what to do, my mom took me out on a hike. Even though the hike may have only been an hour or so, by the end of the hike I was ready to get back to life. And on the way back home, I was smiling, and skipping, and completely forgot about the depression. It's very easy to get wrapped up with anything, and everything. However, I would say most people don't have enough of these moments to clear their head. I believe that is one of the biggest reasons that people lose play. It's all about having balance in your life. If you allow yourself the time, you can regain this balance, and your play mindset.

QUOTE: “Their dark humor often helps them cope with the inherent dangers of their work.”(Brown, page 129). This quote really resonated with me because I often find myself using humor as a coping mechanism to take my mind off bad times and have positivity.

TEXT TO SELF: I’m very interested in getting a job having to do with science. I’m not very sure what type but I’m thinking about either going into subjects like space or chemistry. Play could be involved around the workspace because you would be around other people and if you make a mistake there could be jokes going around about it. I also see those subjects really cool so just being able to be there would probably be like play for me

COMPREHENSION AND SUMMARIZING: I think it’s really sad how a lot of people loose play due to their jobs it. I feel like that’s something I will never want to loose. I want to get into a job where I will enjoy going there and when I get out I want to make sure other people don’t drag me down and take play way from me.

Quote: "If our team loses we may feel down, but there is always a next game, a next season." pg 133

Text to self:I can relate to this because usually when I play games I tend to get very competitive and when we lose we usually get really mad but I always know if we work harder we can always win the next game.

Comprehension and summarizing: I don´t really know what to think of this but I think the more failures you have with your team the closer you guys get to each other.

Quote
"As one high-level executive told me, 'Whenever I'm stuck, I try to imagine what someone smarter than me would do, and then I do that.' " (Brown, 131)

Text to Self
What I want to do for my "job" isn't necessarily considered a "job". This might sound kinda silly, but it's what I want. I want to be a YouTuber because then you make money off of doing what you love. There would be so much playfulness and joy in this job. I can record my hobbies, which is playing video games, and upload it. I can have friends do it with me, or I can collaborate with another YouTuber. I choose wherever I will "work". I would have to be able to record, edit, etc. The way I play now is playing video games and joking around. I can do both of those things in my videos. Sadly, this job isn't very realistic, likely, or stable.

Comprehension & Summarizing
Why do we lose play? "If anyone goes without play for too long, grinding out the work that is expected of them, they will at some point look at their lives and ask (usually silently and privately), 'Is this all there is? Is this what I can expect for the rest of my life?' " I chose this quote because as soon as I read it I thought that it is kinda what I am going through right now. How do we get it back? "The memory of that emotion is going to be the life raft that keeps you from drowning. It can be the rope that lifts you out of your play-deficient well. Your task will be to find activities that allow you to recreate that feeling." I chose this quote because I remember certain memories and I would play imaginatively with toys and COMPLETELY RANDOM OBJECTS, but I don't know how to recreate that pure imaginative play I had. Now, my imaginative play is just thinking or it HAS to be with others.

Quote: our bodies changed Aches and pains come more often and last longer.

Text to self: I personally don’t know what job I wanna do but maybe something that has to do with growing plants.

Comprehension and summarizing: This section talks about how people are losing play and I think that people need play because they need to get their energy out.

QUOTE: “Whenever I’m stuck, I try to imagine what someone smarter than me would do, and then I do that.” (Brown,131).
2. TEXT TO SELF: I would love to be a twitch streamer, it's literally so easy and seems so fun. I love playing video games and streaming is just me broadcasting my video games from other people. If this were to ever happen I would get extremely lucky. The way they pay the streamers is from ad revenue that makes people watch every 30ish minutes. You can also get extra money from people who donate to you or subscribe.
3.COMPREHENSION AND SUMMARIZING: This section talks about how adults and even kids are constantly being pulled away from playing. Many people say that some jobs are just too serious to have any joking around associated with it. That's not necessarily true thought, yes a job can be strict but there is always time for fun and laughter. If it doesn't then it's probably not a good job.

TEXT TO SELF: I’m very interested in getting a job having to do with cinema I don't know what yet but either director or editor.

1. QUOTE: “ People reach the highest levels of a discipline because they are driven by, love, by fun, and by play” (143).

2. TEXT TO SELF: To be honest I really don’t know what is going to happen im the future , but whatever comes I should be gratefully. But I hope that whatever comes I can take out the fun in it, in some way.

3. COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING: we lose play because we are pulled away from it. We can get it back like this, trying to incorporate it into our work by doing it at the right time.

You should think about things that you like to do and you can do research about jobs that have what you like to do. For me I don’t know what to do but I want to do things that I like to do or subjects that I like that we do here. Their is many thing out there nowadays that you look into and when the years pass their will probably be more jobs out there that you will probably like.

''If our team loses we may feel down but there is always a next game a next season''(page 133)

TEXT TO SELF: I agree and disagree with this quote because when I loose against a team I could have beat I get super mad but when its a really good team I still get mad but the next time to play them I try my hardest

COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING : This quote is saying that if you loose a game there is always a next time to play them or beat the other team

QUOTE: “Can play at work itself be useful, though? I would argue that it is essential.” (Brown, 129)

TEXT TO SELF: For the quote I chose it stood out for me because play is needed for pretty much everything we do and if we have a lack of play then something can change the way we are or thinking and it is essential for play to be incorporated in jobs because some jobs might need or have a certain type of play that you will need to use. I still don’t really know what I want to do yet for a job but I know that I want it to have physics or science involved because I think that it is an interesting job for me. I know that you’ll be able to work with other people to figure out new things together and social play can help with that so it can help you with being with others. If working with other people play a big role in the job I want to do then social play will be the main type of play that is going to help out a lot.

COMPREHENSION & SUMMARIZING: In the part that we have read it says that we can lose play by being too occupied with what we are doing for a living when we are adults if our job doesn’t have some type of play involved in it then we start losing play. It says that we prevent that from happening if we start incorporating play in our jobs during the right time for play. I wonder if we get our dream job will it still keep us happy throughout the years or will we get bored of it.

Quote: “When parents and teachers push too hard to get kids to perform.” Page 111
I can connect to my life of how hard my teachers push and that actually helps me do better in school to go along with sports
Text to Self: I could see myself working in the military or as a police officer because I actually would like to do that when I grow up and fight for this country. I think I can find playfulness by doing drills at work and at boot camp. I am very active right now and if I can continue that it can put me in shape for the military.
Response Requirements: We lose play to get a break from and see how we live life without it and how important it is for us to have in life. We can always get play back easily and use it properly.

“Production matters now, but creativity is the source of all growth – the new products, New techniques, new Services, and new solutions to all the problems that Mark the difference between a company that will thrive and one that will soon be deader and the eight track tape”.

QUOTE: “Grove looked at Moore and said, “Why don’t we do it ourselves?” Then they “fired”, walking out of the office door, and walking back in as the better and smarter executives that would replace them”
TEXT TO SELF: I don’t really know what job would fit me, I can be serious at times but also not. I smile and be happy and try not to think so negative and mostly positive. Just smiling and laughing is what I do, and I don’t know what job would best fit me.
COMPREHENSION & COMMENTARY: We can be ourselves when we're working because even in the most serious of times and professions we can have a little laugh and put who we are into it.
