October Reading Log #2: Due October 20th

For your second posting, You should have read at least 30 pages of your book so far (if not more). In your writing, please tell us about the following:

1. What is the title of your book? Who is the author?
2. What page are you on?

3. Characterization:
For fiction readers:
Identify one character in your book and talk about this character in depth. What is this character like? What are some physical traits? Some personality traits? What actions has this character taken so far? What does this character feel about events in the text?

For poetry readers:
What tone/voice is the poet using throughout the poetry? What do you think this poet is like? Do some research on the poet as well. How old is the poet? How long have they been writing? Are there any things about the poet's life that you see influencing the poetry you are reading? How?

For non-ficiton readers:
What is the tone of the author? How are they writing the piece and how do you think readers are meant to feel as they are reading the piece? Identify a section of the text and share it here that you feel demonstrates the author's tone.

4. QCQ: Quote, Comment, Question
-Quote: Choose an excerpt from the text and share it here in quotation marks and with the page number.
-Comment: Explain why you chose this section of the text and what you think is interesting/provocative about it.
-**Question: Pose a question about the section that might extend the reader's thinking or might help a reader of your blog make a connection to his or her own life. Your question should extend what you are reading out into themes that humanity as a whole can connect to/relate to. For example, if your book quote has a character named Joe who wants to become a doctor but can't afford school, your question might be: What are some obstacles in the way of you getting what you want? or What hopes and dreams do you have for the future?. Your question should NOT be something like, What is Joe's mother's name? Your extension question should be something anyone reading this section most likely would be able to answer.

5. Imagery and Symbolism
Find an image from the internet that captures the action, or your thoughts and feelings, about the pages that you read in the past 14 days (Challenge Option: Take the photo yourself!) and explain how this image connects to the book that you are reading.

Challenge Option (Optional!):
Choose one of the questions below and answer it in an analytical essay body paragraph (CDC) format. Your paragraph should include 1) Claim, 2) Data that is cited in MLA format, 3) Commentary about how that data supports that claim. Your paragraph should be a minimum of 5 sentences.

If you need support with MLA formatting for your citation, visit the Purdue Owl Here.

1. Examine the tone of the writer. What tone is the author using and how does it enhance the literature you are reading?
2. Identify a character in the text that you can relate to another character you have encountered in literature or other forms of fiction. What does this character have in common with the other character you know?
3. Identify a moment or event in the text that is an inciting incident. How does this moment or event change the course of action in the text?

For your comment to a peer, read their post and respond to the question that they pose at the end of #4.

What is the title of your book and who is the author? The Secret Book of Frida Kahlo by F.G. Hagenbeck.
What page are you on? I decided to start a new book because the one I was reading before was getting repetitive, therefore I am only on page 17 or so. I will get to page 39 by the need of thee week but I wanted to write down the introduction before I move on so that I don't miss any important details.
What is the tone of your author? How are they writing the piece and how do you think the readers are meant to feel as they are reading the piece? Identify a section of the text that you feel identifies the author's tone. The author has a very mysterious tone. I think the author's intentions were to feel as if the book was a mixture between a story and an inspirational novel. An example of this is that on multiple occasions the author uses descriptive language such as “leafy branches swung from side to side like giant hands reaching for the khalo home. The author also states facts about frida because she is a non-fictional character. A sentence representing that “her father Guillermo, a German immigrant descended from Jews and Hungarians, thought differently”
Your question should NOT be something like, What is Joe's mother's name? Your extension question should be something anyone reading this section most likely would be able to answer.

“Those whispers and rumors mingled at the market with the news of the Kahlo Family’s newest member”
I chose this quote because it represents pretty much the entire book because it is talking about Frida Kahlo's birth and that it was so significant that everyone in town was talking about and could feel change. I think that this quote is significant because it’s applying something like talking to human ability which is personification and I think this is a great example because it really gives you a good mental picture of what is going on. Who is someone that is from a different time period that you think shaped our world? What did they do?

http://artreport.com/file/2016/06/kate-t-parker-photography_ktp_2-740x550.jpg

This photo represents what I’m reading because this part of the book is introducing us to young Frida Kahlo. The author states that her father guillermo realized he wasn’t going to have a boy so he would raise Frida as a boy, Don’t get me wrong frida was very much a girl in many ways, but she had a certain quality, that is more common nowadays that the girls in this photo seem to have.

good question luce! Someone who i really think shaped our world in the way we dress was Coco Chanel. She introduced pants for women, bobs, and most importantly got rid of the corset in the early 1920s. Without her who knows, we could be wearing corsets today.

Someone that is from a different time period that I think shaped our world would have to be Rosa Parks, by refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Alabama, city bus which helped the cause of the civil rights movement in the United States.

I chose hunger games by Suzanne Collins because Carol suggested it and I have heard many good things about the book from friends in school and I suppose it’s so good that they even made movies about it. I'm on page 45.
The main character's name is Katniss Everdeen she is 16 years old and lives in District 12 in Panem with her mother and little sister, Prim. Katniss is described as a girl with olive skin, straight black hair, which she pulls back into a long braid and green-grey eyes. She is brave, courageous, headstrong, caring and very opinionated about the controversial Hunger Games in Panem. She took her sister's place as tribute in the games, which shows that she is self-less, has a lot of courage and love for her sister especially if she's willing to die for her.
“At Eleven years old, with Prim just seven, I took over the family. There was no choice.” (page 27)
This quote pretty much explains Katniss’ life and identity, she became the responsible adult of her household at only eleven to take care of her little sister and grieving sick mother. I think she's selfless, emotionally and physically strong, and the best sister and daughter anyone could ask for.
Would you sacrifice your own happiness for someone else’s?
Would you risk your own life to save that of a family member?
I chose Effie Trinket because when i think of the hunger games she is the first thing to pop up in my mind. I've never seen the movie but in the book Effie Trinket was described in great detail and is kind of the face of the hunger games for me.

I don't know how to put a picture so heres the link.

Hi Andrea! I love the Hunger Games, its a great book. I would sacrifice my happiness for some one else's if they mean a lot to me, like friends or family. I would risk my own life to save a family member because family means a lot to me.

Hi Andrea, I think it is super cool you decided to read hunger games it is one of my favorties. Also, Great question, I think it has to do a lot with empathy and courage. I would like to think I would be able to risk my happiness for a family member, But I don't know If I would be brave enough to risk my life for a family member. I don't have any siblings, and my parents have already lived a lot of their life, so I think I wouldn't risk it just because I know my parents would tell me not to.

Great job,
GuS

Sacrificing your happiness for someone else's is a very noble thing to do, and i think we all do it sometimes. For example, giving someone the last slice of pizza. You would've been happy eating that slice, but instead gave it to someone else so they could enjoy it. I think we've all sacrificed our happiness for someone else's, whether or not the action is big or little.

The Complete Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Sherlock is of course a mysterious guy. Everyone thinks of him as crazy and he always has a million things on his mind. He is very skilled and very detail oriented. Just by looking at you he can know things about you. He is a quiet and clean man. Sherlock is over six feet tall, piercing eyes, and hands almost always blotted with ink. He solved a murder case that no detective around could solve.

"I knew of their guilt though, and I determined that I should be judge, jury, and executioner all rolled into one... I took the marriage ring from her dead finger, and vowed that his dying eyes should rest upon the very ring, and that his last thoughts should be of the crime for which he was punished."
The is the quote from the killer. He and his girlfriend and her father ran away from a town that was going to force her to marry a different man. Eventually she ended up getting caught, had to kill her father, and was forced to marry a man she didn't love. She died from grief and sadness. He then made the rest of his life tracking him down to kill him.
My question is: If someone you love was murdered, would you seek revenge?

For the image, this is one of the things that happened in the story. This was written on the walls with his blood. It is German and it means the word "revenge"

My answer to the question posed is, I would try to, but my inferiority wouldn't get me far in my search. I will try my best, whether it is calling the authorities, to research about the matter. My revenge would be personally investigating it, and then sending out a squad of people to find the murderer.

If someone that I loved was murdered, I don't believe I would seek revenge by wanting to like kill that person, but more I would want to make sure that the person gets sent somewhere they can get help, or go to prison so nothing like it ever happens again. But, then again this question for me is really difficult to answer because I have never had a family member get murdered. So, I don't really know how I would react but I would have to believe that is what my revenge would look like.

To answer the question, I would seek revenge in the sense that I would want them to be caught. I wouldn't try killing them or someone they loved, but I would want them instead to answer the question of why they wanted to kill the person. Then I would have them in prison for the rest of their life or something like that.

To answer the question I feel the most I would do to get revenge is lock the criminal up if that was not already done. I can't find any reason to kill a loved one of their's, or hunting them down to then kill them. Since that would just be such a waste of time they may have caused me pain, but to do the same would make me a worse person.

My book is The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien
I just started this book since I my last book didn’t interest me too much so I’m only on page 20.

The main character of this story is Lieutenant Jimmy Cross, a man in the war, obsessing over his belongings. He carries photos of a woman, Martha, and her letters. He is deeply in love with this girl and can’t help but perceive her notes as love letters, or so he wishes. They are all signed Love, but he knows it’s just a word and she most likely has another lover. Jimmy is an average man, but what he carries definitely shows a lot about him, he wants to be with this girl and carries her love with him on his journey through the war, staying up at night to carefully read through her letters, in case of any mention to interest in Jimmy, and wonders what he would do differently in the moments he remembers when looking at photographs.

“The things they carried were largely determined by necessity.”
I like this quote because the following passage after that proceeds to list the men in Jimmy’s troop, and what they carry, depending on the man. There’s a larger man named Henry Dobbins, who holds extra food for his bigger appetite, the germaphobe Dave Jensen who carries hygiene products and stolen bars of soap, Ted Lavender, who was afraid carried tranquilizers until he was ironically shot. There are several other men listed with just their names and their “necessary” items they carry, which tell you a lot about each person and their values.
What would you carry?

http://www.blockschwenkcollective.com/soldiers_in_France_2.jpg

This photo is what I imagined when I think of all of the men traveling together with their own packs and luggage. It’s also in black in white, assuming this took place long ago, which is what I imagined when reading this book.

I would also bring my rosary that is usually only used by my grandma and myself. And finally i would bring the picture that i took of my parents,my sister and my dog in front of my house on Christmas eve .

The book that I am reading currently is still " I'm Really A Superstar"
By: Chang Yu

The book is online and is a continuous novel, there are no pages and is translated by the chapter, but I convert the chapter to pages, I am on page 696.

One character in this book that I find interesting would be Zhang Yuanqi, she has no relation with Zhang Ye until some interactions using items that the game gave him. Zhang Yuanqi is an interesting character, an S-class superstar according to the rankings. She is nice to the public, but is overcrowded with work occasionally going to Zhang Ye's house to relax. Whenever she is visiting the main characters house she reveals her true personality, a mean one, a carefree attitude. She is known for her beauty, the movies and songs she stars in. Her personality is mixed, one fake, while the other, her true personality carefree, demanding,a kid. Zhang Yuanqi is now relevant to the story because she appears to be one of the hosts on The Voice.

Zhang Ye was not done speaking, “I heard that Korea recently created a rocket which would carry some scientists and bring them all the way to the Sun.”

Yao Jiancai stopped him, “Eh, wait a moment. To the Sun?”

Zhang Ye said, “Yes.”

Yao Jiancai said nervously, “But the Sun is so hot! It’s a ball of flames!”

Zhang Ye blinked and said, “The Koreans said that they would go at night.”

Chapter 496
I chose this quote from the book because it's hilarious, and shows that comedic side of this story. I provokes the Koreans, but in this story the Koreans are hot headed, their temper is short and they are presented as bad guys. One of Zhang Ye's titles is Professional Korean Insulter.

Questions that I pose are, When everyone doubts you, do you give up? Do you have the will to continue knowing that criticism is going to be thrown at you constantly? Do you believe in your products enough to show them that they are wrong for doubting you?

https://thefifthpercentile.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/smack_in_face_slap_computer.jpg

This photo represents what happens in the book time to time, Zhang Ye and his plagiarized works are always doubted by others, he receives a huge amount of hate, but in the end he always manages to prove them wrong, in the case of the book, A professional face smacker.

In the book, “ I’m Really A Superstar” there are many events that unfold as the story continues on. Each event handled in a way to maximize the gain in popularity for the main character. In the most recent events, an example of inciting incident would be when the aring of the promotional video is pushed forwards. In the story, the original air time was set so they had 2 months to prepare, but it was pushed up because the actor in the show that was going to air in the next week abused the use of drugs and got caught. This is an piece of inciting incident because it changed the events that happened in the story. The Voice had half a month's time to prepare, a mega scale production produced in under a month, everyone in the book worked overtime to complete the show. Under the stress of the deadline, Zhang Ye worked continuously for 2 days and so did the team for 6 days. Why I think that this is inciting incident is because it put the main character in the spot and changed the original plan.

Ye, Change. “I'm Really A Superstar.” Translated by C K Talon, Wuxiaworld, 29 May 2017, www.wuxiaworld.com/iras-index/iras-chapter-653/.

The title of the book i'm reading is called the fifth angel, by Tim green. Right now i'm currently on page 127.

Jack has a 15 year old daughter that gets kidnaped and raped, he himself is a lawyer but can't do nothing about it himself he can't represent himself for his daughter so he ask his best friend to be his lawyer to send him to the chair or to at least get a life time sentence in jail for the man that destroyed his daughter. Things don't exactly go the way that he wants them to. So Jack starts to become an alcoholic with depression, the way he was desperate to try and be there for his little girl but the way that Tupp broke his daughter traumatized her so much that she can't come close to men.

“Jack pulled up his gun and fired a round into Bric’s chest. Brice staggered back with a confused look on his face, looking quickly from the scarlet hole in his torso to jack before throwing his hands up in front of his face with a high pitched scream. Jack stepped through the door and began firing more rounds. Splinters of wood flying through the air. . .(pg.124)”

I chose this quote because of the depression Jack stars going insane and tries to kill himself, but can't because he has to do something before he does that. So he starts killing guys that have committed the same crime to other parent’s little girl’s, girls that didn't make it through. Its interesting though because it shows how much he was shattered to go through that far of a length for his daughter.

My question is: In the future if something similar happened to your child do you think you would go to such far lengths for your kid?

this is the picture that represents the feelings and emotions i have about this book. This book really amazes me and always leaves me wondering so i chose this one

1.My book is titled Thirteen Reasons Why. The Author is named Jay Asher
2. PAGE 30
3. The character's name is Hannah baker and she is very open in her mix tape about the truth of everything. She has brown hair, green eyes, clay says she beautiful, so I believe him. She likes to think things through before she does it. She made all the mix tapes that clay Jensen is listening to right now he is listening to the first one. She wants them to be passed down and the tapes and listen to what she is saying.
4.”I hope you're ready, because I'm about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically, why my life ended. And if you're listening to these tapes, you're one of the reasons why. “
PAGE #7
5.I feel like this Image connects to the book in a way the Hannah baker didn't really see clay Jensen in a way that clay saw her. Clay liked her more than a friend. In a way i also think that clay liked her and she know but never said anything...well at least not so far.

Adding to question number 3

Comment:I feel like this quote is important because it tells the character that is hearing the tapes what Hannah got them into and there is a choice of not listening to the tapes but for some apparent reason everyone that has gotten the tapes before Clay Jensen has not gave up the mix tapes.

Questions:
Why has he convinced himself to hear all the tapes ?
Why would she think people would listen to these tapes when they have lives to live?

I love the book your reading. To answer your question, I think Clay convinced himself to listen to all the tapes because it was the only thing Hannah left. She died and nobody really knew why, not even Clay and he was the closest to her. He had to respect her last wishes at least, and listen to the tapes.

1. My book is called the Collapsing Empire and it is by John Scalzi.

2. I am on page 80.

3.One character that stuck out to me so far in my book is cardenia. she is a woman with a lot of power, and a lot of stuff on her plate. The book never really specifically got into her physical traits besides that she is a young woman. some personality traits she has are being funny when she needs to be, serious once she needs to be, and always being able to make herself the person that the public wants to see. some actions that characters taken so far are taking care of her father while he is basically dying. she's also writing a speech to let people know about her father state and that she will become the new emperox. this character takes all the events presented in the book extremely seriously. whenever challenges presented to her or people are questioning her she will flip the switch to make yourself the person that the public wants to represent their world. if she didn't take all the events it's so seriously then the public would not like her as much and her dad would probably in a lot worse shape.

4. Quote: “ He's dying, and quickly,” Cardenia said. “I'm not sure that's calming.” “I think they’d prefer something a little more inspiring. They sent over a speech.”

Comment: I chose this section of the text because it pretty much sums up and represents everything that has happened so far in the story. this quote explains how quickly Cardenias father is dying and why she is so stressed out about the speech because she really wants to make all the people happy and understanding. It also shows how her team is working with her to create a speech that is more inspiring than depressing. you can also tell by this section of the text that Cardenia is talking extremely fast and is really nervous.

Question: Is there anything that you constantly stress about that someone that you know could help you relieve the stress?

5: https://t00.deviantart.net/GsN7TiL9ps1fAsdCJvS3yElj_JY=/fit-in/700x350/filters:fixed_height(100,100):origin()/pre00/1139/th/pre/i/2013/220/9/3/shark_civilization_by_6doug9-d6haj5x.png

I chose this photo because I think it represents how there is this beautiful futuristic world controlled by one person who in the middle of all of it is dying with almost everyone watching. and without actually seeing all of those people or knowing all those people, everyone in the middle of it is trying to create the best world for the people everywhere else. Picture also represents what I think that there world may look like. I see it as a futuristic, and extremely Advanced Society. I also think it represents how the city cherishes things from the past because this picture reminds me of Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh which is a painting that was painted a long time ago, but people still appreciate it today.

1. What is the title of your book? Who is the author?
The title of my book is "Mystery of the Glowing Eye" by Carolyn Keene.
2. What page are you on?
I am on page 137.
3. Characterization:
The main character in this book is Nancy Drew. In the book, she is described as a nice young woman who does not give up easily. Nancy has blue eyes and strawberry blonde hair. For a summary of the case: When Nancy Drew eagerly agrees to help her lawyer father solve the mystery of the glowing eye, she has no way of knowing that it will involve the kidnapping of her close friend Ned Nickerson. A puzzling note in Ned's handwriting sets Nancy and her friends Bess and George on a hazardous search for a bizarre criminal. Not only is Nancy greatly worried about Ned, but also she is alarmed by the high-handed methods of a woman lawyer who tries to take the case away from her. So far, Nancy has uncovered clues to the case, but she has not solved it yet. Nancy wants to find Ned because she is concerned that she may never see Ned again.
4. QCQ: Quote, Comment, Question
-Quote: "Without warning the engine burst into life and the rotors began to whir. 'The copter's getting ready to leave!' Nancy cried out. 'I must go with it. Maybe it will take me to Ned.' She began to climb aboard. Mr. Drew jumped forward and made a grab for his daughter.'No!' he shouted. 'It's too dangerous! If the copter is controlled by an enemy, the operator could kidnap you and even kill you!'"-Page 14
-Comment: I chose this section of the text because it shows how eager Nancy is to solve the case.
-Question: Would you be willing to put your life at risk to do something you love?

I am currently reading The Shining by Stephen King, Up to page 60.

Danny is one of the main characters of my book, Danny is the son of Jack and Wendy. Danny is very calm and often appears sad. Danny has blonde hair and due to his young age he is very small. His eyes are blue and he has typical chubby cheeks. You would often find him with something in his hands, from road maps to gliders, he like to play with things. He has an imaginary friend who he spends his alone time with, and hes very quiet. He often respond to things with about 5 words and keeps his thoughts as thoughts. This character has taken very little action as most events stay inside his head, he can read minds in a strange way and he keeps the thoughts to himself and refuses to discuss what hes heard from his parents. Danny feels very sad and scared. He often hears the words Suicide and Divorce come from his parents mind. And those words scare Danny, His best friends who's imaginary showed Danny scary for shadows like a mallet with clump of skull and hair.

"Love came out of mommy and daddy like love came from the couple walking down." This shows that even if the family may be very dysfunctional they all still have a deep love for each other.
I would like to know what about each other they love? Why does Wendy love jack and vice versa?

https://goodmenproject.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/father-son-home.jpg

I feel that this image perfectly describes Danny and Jacks relationship so far. To me the photo showed a father and son having a good time, but its almost night, which means they don't have much time together. That's how jacks and Danny relationship works as well.

Being able to basically read other's minds is a creepy thing. Plus I never understood imaginary friends as I always found them creepy and never understood why when I was younger others were so fond of them. It would be interesting to know how Jack and Wendy got together. What was Jack like before all this started going down and why Wendy has stayed with him for a long time. It might be explained in the book, it might not. I wouldn't know, I have only seen the movie.

1. What is the title of your book? Who is the author?
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes

2. What page are you on?
I am on page #35.

3. Characterization:
For fiction readers:
Identify one character in your book and talk about this character in depth. What is this character like? What are some physical traits? Some personality traits? What actions has this character taken so far? What does this character feel about events in the text?.

The main character Charlie Gordon, who is a slow adult with a great work ethic, is a test subject for an expirement to increase intelligence. He is being worked with by numerous doctors and completes various tests to test his intelligence. One of these tests is competing in maze races with a genius rat named Algernon. At first, he loses to algernon repeatedly, but after he has had the surgery to raise his intelligence he wins for the first time. Charlie has had a very tough life, his parents were disappointed in his intelligence and kicked him out, and know one really loves him. But now, he has a job at a bakery and goes to special school all due to his incredible work ethic, and that is why he is the perfect slow adult for this experiment.

4. QCQ: Quote, Comment, Question
-Quote: Choose an excerpt from the text and share it here in quotation marks and with the page number.

"He says dont get discoridged because it takes time and it happins slow. He says it took a long time with Algernon before he got 3 times smarter then he was before. Thats why Algernon beats me all the time because he had that operashun too. That makes me feel better. I coud probly do that amazed faster thana reglar mouse. Maybe some day III beat Algernon. Boy that would be some·thing. So far Algernon looks like he mite be smart perminent."
- Page #21

-Comment: Explain why you chose this section of the text and what you think is interesting/provocative about it.

I chose this section of the text because this is when Charlie discovers that Algernon is a very intelligent mouse. Charlie also discovers that his operation will increase his intelligence, it will just take a little bit of time. But, what really interests me is the drive that charlie is going to show to become smarter than Algernon, and I think it shows how important work ethic is.
Question:

How important is work ethic in being successful? What times in your life have you shown grit to work for something? Do you plan on using work ethic in your future?

5. Imagery and Symbolism
Find an image from the internet that captures the action, or your thoughts and feelings, about the pages that you read in the past 14 days (Challenge Option: Take the photo yourself!) and explain how this image connects to the book that you are reading.

Link:http://www.grittv.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Grit_Bluesky.png
This image connects to the book I am reading because the main character Charlie has all odds stacked against him, yet he's succeeding. As I mentioned earlier, his parents never gave him a chance and he is retarded. Despite this, his work ethic has brought him a part time job, friends, and a surgery that will make him intelligent. He lost in a race to algernon(the genius mouse) for 3 weeks straight, and now he is beating him consistently. Girt/Work Ethic is more important then intelligence, and he is proof.

3. Identify a moment or event in the text that is an inciting incident. How does this moment or event change the course of action in the text?

In the novel Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, the inciting incident is when Charlie Gordon gets an operation to increase his intelligence. In the story, Charlie Gordan, a retarded adult has been recruited for a special operation that will increase his intelligence. Daily, he writes progress reports that tell readers the story. Progress report :2 " I thot that was all but when I got up to go he stopped me. He said now sit down Charlie we are not thru yet. Then I dont remembe

What is the title of your book? Who is the author? The title of the book is They came to baghdad by Agatha Cristie.
2. What page are you on? I am on page 34.

3. Characterization:
For fiction readers:
Identify one character in your book and talk about this character in depth. What is this character like? One character in the book that is in the story for not that long is Captain Crosbie he is a cheerful man, he likes good stories and kind. What are some physical traits? Some physical traits are that Hes short and stocky. Some personality traits? Some of his personality traits are that hes kind and likes a good story but hes also pretty loud. What actions has this character taken so far? The actions captain Crosbie has taken was that he took apart of of the spiders web of a name that wrote Anna Scheele. What does this character feel about events in the text? This character isn't really mentioned that often in the book except for the first 10 pages, But he seemed chocked that the spiders web showed the name of Anna Scheele.
4. QCQ: Quote, Comment, Question
-Quote: Choose an excerpt from the text and share it here in quotation marks and with the page number.
"In the middle of the spiders web wrote a name: Anna Scheele. Underneath that he put a big query mark. Then he took off his hat, and left the office".
-Comment: Explain why you chose this section of the text and what you think is interesting/provocative about it. I choose this section of the text because it leads in the story of Anna Scheele and how she is about to go to baghdad.
-**Question: Pose a question about the section that might extend the reader's thinking or might help a reader of your blog make a connection to his or her own life. Your question should extend what you are reading out into themes that humanity as a whole can connect to/relate to. Your question should NOT be something like, What is Joe's mother's name? Your extension question should be something anyone reading this section most likely would be able to answer. Is it really that much of a coincidence that the spiders web choose Anna Scheele and that she will be going to Baghdad? Also, did she get convinced by someone to go to Baghdad?

I choose this photo because I feel that there are little details in the story that hide in plain sight or they are tiny details but can change the course of the story. Just like when Captain Crosbie Took off his hat and left the room when Anna Scheele was choosen by the spiders web.

Reading log #2
1. The title of my book is The Picture of Dorian Gray, and the author is Oscar Wilde. I am currently on page 34 and starting a new chapter.
2. Characterization:
The tone of the author is very dark, I'm only on page 34, but from what I’ve heard about him and even in these pages I could see a little bit here and there how dark it will turn out.I feel that the readers are supposed to feel that they want to keep on reading. I’m not too deep into the book, but I find myself wanting to keep flipping the pages while I read. This book is very thought provoking, there's a lot of times where there one or two pages describing one concept, and how I stop myself and think of what was written. It's very interesting seeing how it's written and how its hooking me in the story. An example that I found from the book to demonstrate the tone is, “Oh, if it were only the other way! If the picture could change, and I could be always what I am now! Why did you paint it? It will mock me some day- mock me horribly!” I chose this section of the book because I feel that it's crazy he someone can feel jealous and angry of a painting of themselves just because the painting will show how beautiful they were when young while they grow old.
3. QCQ: Quote, Comment, Question
“Why can it matter? Cried Dorian gray, laughing as he sat down on the seat at the end of the garden. “It should matter everything to you mr.Gray. I chose this quote from the book, and I find that it represent a question that I ask myself when I read It. The pages I read this week were mostly about how after Basil, the painter, finished painting Dorian Gray, he felt devastated that he would grow old and never be as beautiful as he was in the painting. I find it interesting that it matters so much to Dorion of staying attractive that he would do anything to stay as how he was right than in there. (as said in the story) I ask myself why? Why does it matter so much to him?
My question to you is, “What is something that you care so much about that you would do anything for it/them?” Why?

4. Imagery and Symbolism
When I was reading the question on what image captures your feeling about the pages you have read this is the first thing that popped up in my head. I thought of someone running away from there shadow, someone being scared of themselves because Dorion was scared of himself growing old.

1. Snow Crash by Neal Stephonson

2. pg 41

3. The main character is Hiro Protagonist. He is a tall Asian man with twin katannas. He is a good hacker, and is now an ex-pizza delivery guy. He, along with one other person created a thing in the metaverse (a virtual reality version of the internet) called the Black Sun that few people can walk into.

4. Quote: "That's a hypercard. I thought you said Snow Crash was a drug," Hiro says, now totally nonplussed. "It is," the guy says. "Try it." "Does it fuck up your brain?" Hiro says. "Or your computer?" "Both. Neither. What's the difference?" Hiro finally realizes that he has just wasted sixty seconds of his life having a meaningless conversation with a paranoid schizophrenic. He turns around and goes into The Black Sun." Chapter 5, pg 41

Comment: I just like the end of the conversation and what Hiro realizes. I find it kinda funny.

Question: What do you think Snow Crash (the drug) does?

1. The title of my book is called Paper Towns by John Green

2. I am currently on page 45.

3. The tone of the author is mysterious and adventures. The author is writing the piece like a puzzle. I believe the readers are suppose to feel curious and think to ourselves “why?” at least for the two chapters I read. An example that I found in the book to demonstrate the author's tone is, “And so May fifth could have been any day--until just before midnight, when Margo Roth Spiegelman slid open my screenless bedroom window for the first time since telling me to close it nine years before.” I chose this text from the book because it’s strange and out of nowhere that the author brings back Margo after such a long time.

4. Quote: “So like I said, I need a car. Also, I need you to drive it, because I have to do eleven things tonight, and at least five of them involve a getaway man.”
Comment: I chose this quote because Margo came back after 9 years asking Q who admires her, to help her out, and thinks for a while and agrees even though he doesn't know what he's getting himself into.
Question: Have you done something for a friend or family member even though you weren't aware of what was going to happen? And why did you choose to do it or not?

Courage to Soar is the title to the the book I am reading and Simone Biles wrote it. I am in page 73 and chapter 6. This is the end of the quote that i had started for previously and also it can be found in page 45 “...so Adam probably knew I’d go for a broke. I’m reading The Fellowship of the Ring by, J. R. R. Tolkien
I’m currently on page 323.
Frodo baggins. Considered a young hobbit by others as hobbits live more than 100 years. Frodo is in this book at the age of 53. When he was child, around the age of 9, he was abandoned by his parents. He was quickly taken into the hands of a hobbit with the name of Bilbo. He had a considerable amount of wealth so Frodo as a child lived basically like royalty. His father figure found a ring while adventuring once and kept it away for 40 years until he was told to pass it on to Frodo so he could destroy as it contain dark power. The ring gave him the power of invisibility, but in return it weakened him allowing him to eventually be easily controlled by evil. Any holder of the ring, if they put it on there finger at least once. They will find themselves having trouble removing it from their keep. Throughout Frodo life, he never remembered his parents but only hear rumors of what happened. Many agreed that his parents tried to kill each other. He is really caring, he always wants to make sure that everyone is okay before making sure he himself is okay. This trait of his has not helped him much in terms of survival. He has almost met its demise because of this. This character task is to walk many and many paces to get to a place where he can dispose of the ring to make sure none can get its power. He has walked many paces with friends of all sorts, getting knocked out and almost killed. In the process he has made sure no one else by his side had fallen. He is pretty tall for a hobbit and seems to never aged as other hobbits have said. He doesn’t want to go on the journey he has been on as the dangers keep rising. He knows that he has to keep going so he tries to not complain.

“Poppin felt curiously attracted by the well” Pg.305
He had no reason to feel attracted to the deep well. He was afraid of heights and other things. We may have been slightly careless but he is usually a little more aware about what could happen. Have you ever felt that you had no control of what you were doing. Like an unknown presence was taking control over you?

“Not all those who wander are lost” Even if you may seem like you are travelling in the wrong direction. You may still know where the destination. It focuses on the idea that maybe staying on the path isn’t the best of decisions, but being off the path for too long can make it difficult to reach your goal. There has to be a nice mix so you don’t run into unnecessary trouble while at the same you don’t lose your way.

1. I’m reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
2. I’m on page 220.

3.I really like the character Hermione. She is so smart and strong. Even though she is bossy, she is still one of my favorite HP characters. Hermione is averaged size with puffy curly brown hair, brown eyes and very smart! In the movies she's played (fantastically) by Emma Watson. Hermione Has been there for the boys, Ron and Harry, when they needed help with anything from homework to figuring out who Nicolas Flamel is. She is uneasy with breaking rules but they haven't really been caught yet. She is very passionate about getting good grades and succeeding in life. She is the first witch in her family, her parents are muggles.

4. “ ‘One can never have enough socks,’ said Dumbledore. “Another christmas come and gone and I didnt get a single pair. People insist they give me books.’ ” Chapter 12 page 214. I find this quote odd. Harry asked dumbledore what he saw in the mirror and dumbledore said socks. I'm not sure if he told the truth, Dumbledore has many great quotes, this one confuses me. What’s behind the quote? Is he lying? Why socks? Do the socks mean something else?

5.
It's about the last part i read. What would i see in the mirror? It's a magical image, the light from the window gives it that magical glow, It's a dim and curious setting, just like the scene and how i was falling. It's also kind of sad, i felt bad for harry when i was reading this part.

Maybe socks represent protection of your feet, since in the old days socks were hard to make and get. You had to get the cotton or wool, make the fabric, than sew it all together, which was very labour intensive. Maybe JK Rowling grew up without socks, you never know.

What emotions do you feel when reading this book?

1. What is the title of your book? Who is the author?
Gunslinger by Stephen King
2. What page are you on?
257
3. Characterization:
Roland is quiet, reclusive, intelligent, and skilled. The book doesn’t describe his appearance which I prefer because it leaves more to the imagination. So far you learn why Roland is so relentless. It’s all because of the man in black, you learn the history between the two. He is traveling through the desert and the only thing keeping him going is his end goal, destroying the man in black.

4. QCQ: Quote, Comment, Question
“He pushed shells into hot chambers, smelling the aromas of shave and tonsure, smelling his own flesh as the calluses at the tips of his fingers singe.” pg 91
I chose this quote because of how the author described his motions. I think that the way that he worded the sentence was really well done. Also, the way he describes the thought process of Roland as he is loading his gun is very well done.
Q) Have you ever wanted something so badly, you would do anything for it?
5. Imagery and Symbolism
The image that I chose symbolizes hard work:
https://rdcnewscdn.realtor.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/working-hard-1024x682.jpg

Challenge Option (Optional!)
2. Identify a character in the text that you can relate to another character you have encountered in literature or other forms of fiction. What does this character have in common with the other character you know?
One character I think that is similar to Roland from the book Gunslinger (King, 1982) is Daenerys Targaryen from the book Game of Thrones (Martin, 1995). They are both extremely hard working and won’t let ANYTHING get in the way of achieving their goals. They both faced hardships, Roland being the last of his kind. Daenerys being a woman, and sold to her husband for her home country’s benefit. They both also have a tenacity that gets them through really complicated problems.

I really like your question, and can relate to it. Yes, I have wanted something so badly that I would do anything for it. Not so much a physical thing, but more a chance to get better at something. For me, I've wanted to improve in dance, so I worked harder than I've ever worked before to get to that point that I wanted to get to.

1. My book is The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.
2. I'm on page 175.

3. Characterization:
For fiction readers:
Identify one character in your book and talk about this character in depth. What is this character like? What are some physical traits? Some personality traits? What actions has this character taken so far? What does this character feel about events in the text?

My favorite character right now, personally, is the nihilistic robot, but I also really like Arthur Dent, the protagonist. He's had a difficult journey. From the demolition of the earth to the many threats of death, this good boy deserves a break, which, unfortunately, he doesn't really get. His human mind hasn't been able to fully comprehend the advanced technologies and different species he's seen. After the unfortunate annihilation of his home planet, Arthur was forced to board a Vogon ship with his alien friend, called Ford Prefect. After being captured and tortured with the Vogon's awful poetry, they were ejected into space and picked up by the Improbability Drive, where they met Zaphod Beeblebrox, Trillan, and Marvin, the really depressed robot. Together, they've made it to a planet called Magrathea, the former richest planet in the galaxy (before the economic collapse). A planet who's job was to custom-make other planets, something only the wealthy could afford, leading to the ultimate collapse of business. When they got down to the surface of the planet, Trillan, Ford, and Zaphod left Arthur with Marvin while they went to explore a cave. Night fell and Arthur met an old man, a citizen of Magrathea, who informs Arthur that the citizens of this planet were "asleep." That is where I left off.

4. QCQ: Quote, Comment, Question
-Quote: "Oh freddled gruntbuggly...thy micturations are to me! As plurdled gabbleblotchits on a lurgid bee!"-Page 65.
-Comment: I love this quote so much just because the Vogon's poetry is so gosh diggity darn bad. The humor of this book is so enjoyable.
-**Question: will this Vogon pursue a writing career? Because their poetry is so good honestly

5. Image: https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiE6caV94DXAhXLyVQKHbluBscQjRwIBw&url=http%3A%2F%2Ffreedesignfile.com%2F289351-desolate-planet-stock-photo-04%2F&psig=AOvVaw2Hezxz0m5vtCdHH6urIhfg&ust=1508648295340251

I feel like this image captures the past few chapters because Magrathea is a desolate, dead planet, and this is what i feel it would look like.

What is the title of your book? Who is the author?
the princess saves herself in this one by amanda lovelace.
What page are you on?
I finished the book a few days ago.
What tone/voice is the poet using throughout the poetry?
Like rupi kaur, the author uses no capitalization which gives off that she might be calm but each poem is deep and heavy.
What do you think this poet is like?
I think the poet is someone who’s been through a lot. Her poems talk about love and loss so I think while reading her poems I could tell she's been through a lot.
Do some research on the poet as well. How old is the poet? How long have they been writing? Are there any things about the poet's life that you see influencing the poetry you are reading? How?
Lovelace’s age was nowhere to be found but I believe she is in her early 30’s. She wrote her first poem when she was 11 and at the age of 14 she joined a poetry club and read her pieces at local cafes. From there she continued writing poetry. Amanda Lovelace has been through a lot of traumatic experiences which helped her write poems with topics like child abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, self-harm, death, suicide, loss and some more heavy topics.
QCQ: Quote, Comment, Question
-Quote: Choose an excerpt from the text and share it here in quotation marks and with the page number.
“your happiness comes before anyone else’s happiness -the real meaning of “self-respect”
-Comment: Explain why you chose this section of the text and what you think is interesting/provocative about it.
I really like this poem because it’s saying that you should care for your well-being before you care for someone else’s. It helps me appreciate myself and self worth. I think the topic for this poem was self-love.
Have you ever cared so much for someone else’s happiness before yourself?
Have you learned to care for your happiness before anyone else's?
Imagery and Symbolism
http://d3i6fh83elv35t.cloudfront.net/newshour/extra/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2013/11/girlrising.jpg
I chose this image because this book is how the author has been through a lot and was able to come through and have a happy ending. Like the title, the author was able to save herself from everything she’s been through and it shows a lot of girl empowerment.

I am on page 32 of the book “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky.

The main character in the story is named Charlie. We don’t here much of his physical character because he is writing to an anonymous person (the reader) and he does not want to be known. That is why he uses fake names for everyone he knows including himself when he writes to us, the reader. He is pretty unsocial and is pretty clueless of the common things to know as a 9th grader. Though he is school smart, he’s not very “street smart.” So far he has taken an honors writing class and is trying his best to participate in school activities more. He is feeling very open to the ideas and opportunities that come upon him during the text.

“He got this very serious look on his face after I told him, and he said something to me I don’t think I will forget this semester or ever. “Charlie, we accept the love we think we deserve.” I just stood there, quiet. Bill patted my shoulder and gave me a new book to read. He told me everything was going to be okay.”

I chose this because it is a quote from the book I have been thinking about ever since I read it. It’s really powerful and a quote like this is going to be known for a long time because of the fact it’s a very memorable book and will be talked about for years to come. This quote personally struck a chord with me because it’s good advice to be known and lots of people should learn this.

My question: What’s one of the most powerful things someone has said to you?

Image: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/95/b3/ca/95b3ca97009f90ebb8e92288b46114cd--identity-art-faux-flowers.jpg

This image reminds me of the book I’m reading because it reminds me a lot of Charlie. The flowers represent the fact that he has so many interesting and beautiful thoughts going on in his head.

What is the title of your book? Who is the author?
My book is Life In Motion by Misty Copeland.
2. What page are you on?
I am on page 50.

3. Characterization:
For non-ficiton readers:
What is the tone of the author? How are they writing the piece and how do you think readers are meant to feel as they are reading the piece? Identify a section of the text and share it here that you feel demonstrates the author's tone.

The tone of the author is very realistic and true. She is speaking from a point where her life wasn’t the best, and difficulties were coming her way. Readers are meant to feel inspired, or also be able to relate to Misty. She says “Completely comfortable in my own skin,” which shows how once she found her escape, which was dance, she began to feel natural and confident.

4. QCQ: Quote, Comment, Question
-Quote: Choose an excerpt from the text and share it here in quotation marks and with the page number.
“Do I really deserve this? I thought. So many of these other girls are so much more experienced, so much stronger. Why me?” - Page 51
-Comment: Explain why you chose this section of the text and what you think is interesting/provocative about it.
This piece of text is a common statement many people may think to themselves, in a time of doubt or fear. The idea of questioning herself and her capability is something that is very relatable to many.

-Question: Pose a question about the section that might extend the reader's thinking or might help a reader of your blog make a connection to his or her own life.
When was a time where you doubted yourself? How did you react?

5. Imagery and Symbolism
Find an image from the internet that captures the action, or your thoughts and feelings, about the pages that you read in the past 14 days (Challenge Option: Take the photo yourself!) and explain how this image connects to the book that you are reading.
This is a photo of me at my dance studio. This represents what is currently happening in my book, because Misty is training hard to achieve her goals.

i like this, one time when i want sure over something, i just sat and didn't know what to do and left it, that wasn't good. I should have stuck up for my self. i've learned from that and now know that when you doubt your self, do it anyway, something good most likely will come out, and if not, bad times don't last forever.

The title is The Hobbit. The author is J. R. R. Tolkien.I am on page 30.
One interesting character in this book is Bilbo. Bilbo is a small hobbit who wants nothing more than to be left alone. Bilbo enjoys to stay at home, smoke his pipe, and sit by the fire. Bilbo is a hobbit. That means he is shorter than any man. Bilbo has brown hair and he usually likes to wear a comfortable jacked fitted with pocket watch and handkerchief. This character has been told to go on an adventure. He keeps telling everyone he doesn't wish to go but when Gandalf tells him that they are waiting he runs over to meet them. This character wants nothing more than to sit in his own home. But in his head Bilbo is curious about this adventure.
The author speaks in a 1st person pov. The author likes to use words that sooth you and make you feel the peacefulness of the Shire. I believe readers are meant to feel curious about the journey ahead. In one part of the book on their journey as they are going to stop for the night a rain storm rolls in and the author describes 2 dwarfs both attempting to make a fire while the others slept, ate, and sang. In this part you are watching bilbo and the reader is amazed he is here going along on this adventure.
On page 25 “Gandalf is running over this hill with Bilbo's pipe and lots of handkerchiefs.”
This part is interesting because Gandalf even though he forced him into this adventure really enjoys Bilbo's company. So him running over the hill with handkerchief was to humor him a bit but also make him a little happy.
Have you ever felt like your forced into something you don't want to do, but then you end up enjoying it? That's how bilbo felt through this book.

This is an image of the shire. I picked this image because it strongly resembles peacefulness. For the last 30 pages it's been very peaceful.

One of the main characters in my book is Pierre, the illegitimate son of Count Bezukhov. He’s an intelligent person, but his views aren’t accepted by the aristocratic society of Russia. One of his most controversial views is that Napoleon is actually a good man, since he’s enacting social reforms in France. He physically is small, a bit on the chubby side, has curly hair, and he wears eye glasses. He himself, is enjoying his life so far. He has been partying and going to social events around St. Petersburg (the old Russian capital), but his father is ill, and he doesn’t seem to care too much about that.

“If everyone would make war to his own convictions, there would be no war.”

Prince Andrei
I think this quote is important, since it questions the human nature of war. It shows that war is a collective movement and not just one crazy man leading an army.

My question for you:
Do you believe war is a collective movement, or an issue of a singular mad man like Hitler or Stalin?

Nice question. I feel as if war is a collective movement because most everyone that joined in and helped out with people like hitler did it because they had the same believes, all it took to start the war in the first place was someone to bring it up.

I am reading ‘a beautiful composition of broken’ By r.h. Sin and currently i’m on page 67.

In my book I feel most that the tone is so soft. None of the letters are capitalized just as the author Rupi Kaur has her poems. I haven’t come to find why he does but it makes it clamer to read the words and there’s no distractions of capitalized letters. From what I have read he began to love poetry in the 3rd grade and began actually writing his own in 2014 when he had made a Twitter account for poetry he had become very popular and made a book out of the things he was posting in 2015. While writing these poems he was going through heartbreak and as he said “My words are what I would say to my sister, my mother, or the women I want to protect,” he usually writes from their struggles with other men, he thinks women shouldn’t have to deal with jerks and should stand up for what they want. Just at the age of 28 he has written 4 different poetry books and is writing another this coming year called ‘planting gardens in graves.’

Quote: ongoing. Page 48. “Your love is infinite find someone who understands this”

Comment: I chose this poem for the simple fact that it’s short and sweet. Love is such a fascinating things and if you can’t find someone who understands your love then they don’t truly deserve you.

Question: What are your thoughts on this poem? And what do you consider love to be?

I chose a picture I had taken of the moon because I found that the author's name is Reuben Holmes. And he adds Sin because ““Sin” is a nod to the Mesopotamian god of the moon” and he often writes late at night.

1. What is the title of your book? Who is the author?
The book I am reading is “Astrophysics for people in a hurry” by Neil Degrasse Tyson.
2. What page are you on?
I am on page 96, chapter 6-Dark Energy.
3.For non-fiction readers:
What is the tone of the author? How are they writing the piece and how do you think readers are meant to feel as they are reading the piece? Identify a section of the text and share it here that you feel demonstrates the author's tone.
“We are stardust brought to life, then empowered by the universe to figure itself out—and we have only just begun.”
― Neil deGrasse Tyson, Astrophysics for People in a Hurry
I Think this quote can amaze the reader, That’s one of the greatest things of this book and astrophysics. It’s physics of the universe, physics that don’t apply on our world. In this book Neil Degrasse Tyson goes into detail on that. He says, “Most people look at the universe and stars and feel small- But I feel big, because my atoms (stardust) came from those stars.”
4. QCQ: Quote, Comment, Question
-Quote: Choose an excerpt from the text and share it here in quotation marks and with the page number.
“The universe is under no obligation to make sense to you. —NDT”
― Neil deGrasse Tyson, Astrophysics for People in a Hurry, Page number: 13

-Comment: Explain why you chose this section of the text and what you think is interesting/provocative about it.
I used the quote as an example of a good argument for astrophysics. Usually a good handful of either closed minded, religious or argumentative people would disagree with these statements.(Not meant to offend anyone.) I find this interesting because the more we learn about the universe, the more or less it makes sense.

I am reading Sapphique by Catherine Fisher.

One of the main characters is Claudia. Claudia is a confusing person. Currently, she was just told that her (about to be) husband Finn is not the one for her and she let it go without caring too much. She doesn't care too much because she worked to get the man (Finn) out of Incarceron (which this book is a sequel of) which she didn't do for nothing.

My book is called Graceling by Kristin Cashore. It's about a young girl named Katsa with the incredible gift of being great at most forms of combat. Because of this she is ordered by her uncle, who happens to be a wealthy king, to do his dirty work that includes hurting or killing people.

I am on around page 100, where she meets another young boy from her kingdom. She notices this boy has different colored eyes, just like her. This means that he is graced with an outstanding ability. She quickly learns by fighting him, that his grace is being an amazing fighter.

They are careful and on edge about each other at first, but become great friends and gain each other's trust, as shown by the quote, "Katsa," he said in the dirt. "I beg you to trust me, as I've trusted you." I think this quote shows a lot because

This leads into my question, which is "has there ever been a risk you took for almost no reason that seemed to pay off?"

The book I am reading is 13 reasons why and the author is Jay Asher.

What page are you on?
I’m on page 30 on the book 13 reasons why.

3. Characterization:
For fiction readers:
Identify one character in your book and talk about this character in depth. What is this character like? What are some physical traits? Some personality traits? What actions has this character taken so far? What does this character feel about events in the text?

I feel like clay was a really nice person. I feel like ever since the death of Hannah Baker, Clay changed a lot as a person because he started to trust less people. Clay was a person that worked at the movies and that’s how he met Hannah. Clay is starting to cry and get emotional because he’s hearing Hannah’s voice after awhile.

QCQ: Quote, Comment, Question
-Quote: Choose an excerpt from the text and share it here in quotation marks and with the page number.
“I swallow hard tears sting at the corners of my eyes. Because it’s Hannah’s voice. A voice I thought I’d never hear again. I can’t throw that away.” -page 16.

-Comment: Explain why you chose this section of the text and what you think is interesting/provocative about it.
I think that this is interesting because I thought that the character clay felt like he missed Hannah so
much.

-**Question: Pose a question about the section that might extend the reader's thinking or might help a reader of your blog make a connection to his or her own life.
So clay was somehow not getting over the death of Hannah Baker. My question is why is Clay so curious about what Hannah’s voice is about to say?

My book is called the alchemist and it is by Paulo Coelho
I am currently on page 33 in this book.
I feel like in my book they want the reader to think a lot about society and the world and how things work. Like this main character in this book is a shepherd and his sheep are kind of like us the people. It teaches a lot I have already seen a lot of symbolism. I guess you could take away a lot of from this.
“Even though the sheep didn't teach me to speak Arabic. But the sheep had taught him something even more important: that there was a language in the world that everyone understood, a language the boy had used throughout the time that he was trying to improve things at the shop. It was the language of enthusiasm, of things accomplished with love and purpose, and as part of a search for something believed in and desired” Big quote but what I feel like this means is in the book he is learning a lot. He also learned how to speak a language but most importantly he learned that people can recognize good qualities through their actions and gestures. What other “language” do you think the whole world understands?

3. The tone is happy and sad times. The way the author is writing the story it is meant to be comedy. Pages 99-121 talk about her getting through depression.
4. Quote, page 115-“And finally-finally-after a lifetime of feelings and anxiety and more feelings, i didn’t have any feelings left.”

The name of my book is called shadow on the mountain. I decided to change my book because it was hard to understand what was going on. So I'm on page 20 but will finish the pages later on this week.

Espen who loves being adventures and is a 14 year old Norwegian boy during world war 2. This is a true story of a wartime spy. A day came by and Espen was riding his bicycle along the trail and after a few minutes someone was behind him. In his head he kept saying that "do not look behind his shoulder or why didn't they have passed in front of him". Then when he stopped and he saw car coming towards him, soldiers started coming of the car. The men's that Espen had saw were German soldiers. I though he felt like he was scared that they were going to attack him or had thought that every time he reached for something he had to be honest that he Espen probably (this is a memory Espen had before). The author had a angry tone because of what's happening with the Germans, Norwegians, and the Nazis. I think tha author wanted us to feel interested or curious of their words because it talks about a background story of World War 2.

A quote that I've found on page 9 is "darkness had descended; it seemed to sharpen the smell of fall, sharp and yeasty like something baking. Sour rye bread, maybe." I picked this quote because it sounded like a poem. What I think what it means is that what everything going on in world war 2 it made the weather feel like as if the people were imagining about food and since Espen is always hungry all the time. What do you think about Espens future is going to be after World War 2 has ended?

Challenge option
According to the authors tone it feels as if she is trying to overpower the German nazis and Hitler.

Mr. Henriksen and Tante Marie have something in common. They both warn Espen and tell him things that he cannot say to others. Mr. Henriksen was his teacher and he told him "not to talk scared to the German Nazi, just be simple and don't be as honest with them because they cannot be trusted" said Mr. Henriksen. Tante Marie because she had asked him where are the illegal papers he brang and where were you all this time to Espen? He said that I got stopped by the Germans and asked about what the differences are about jelly and jam. Then Tante Marie asked if he kept it simple on the way here if they asked where you were going right. He said yes.

Espen was 14 years old when the Germans supervised the Norwegians. Espen watches the Germans be all friendly, but He can't help the feeling of being angry, disappointed in what the Nazis had become in the later years. Some of his soccer teammates before work with the nazis couriers and now Kjell had to help with medications because his grandmother is ill to help give her medications to.

What is the tone of the author? How are they writing the piece and how do you think readers are meant to feel as they are reading the piece? Identify a section of the text and share it here that you feel demonstrates the author's tone.

This book has a cautionary tales feel. The author is talking about his life changing experience to become a navy seal. It is meant to make the reader know that anything is possible but most things will make you work hard for it an example of this is how the author was in the absolute back of the BUDS training class he kept on going through both psychological and physical torture and got to where he is today.
4. QCQ: Quote, Comment, Question
-Quote: “There is another saying in BUDS: Ideally you want to become the grey man. In other words , you become invisible nobody notices you because you are doing everything so perfectly you never stand out.”
-Comment: I thought this was interesting because in life usually you want to stand out of the crowd and be remembered for something you did and be looked up to but that is not the case here you don't want to stand out and everyone there is so good at everything they are doing they make the people who know what they are doing look like an average guy.
-Question: Do you prefer to be one of the people that stand out or one of the ones who sinks into the background?

1. I am still reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

2. I am on page 37.

3. Santiago the protagonist of my book, is shepherd from an Andalusian town. He is very curious and determined to learn what he can about the world. Their is a natural adventurousness to him which he doesn't show you much of until he met a man by the name of Melchizedek. Melchizedek explains the magical wonders of nature and personal legends. Personal legends are basically when you start to pursue your passions. Santiago then decides to fulfill his personal legend, going to find treasure at the egyptian pyramids.

4.“People learn, early in their lives, what is their reason for being,” said the old man, with a certain bitterness. “Maybe that’s why they give up on it so early too. But that’s the way it is.” (25) I chose this quote because it seems to be an interesting way to of capturing the philosophical storytelling if The Alchemist. Melchizedek says that dreams are not silly and shouldn't be ignored. I think that this quote is very agreeable because your dreams and aspirations will allow you to live your happiest life. What is one of your passions in life?

My book is The Giver By Lois Lowry

I'm on page 45

One of the characters is lily who is seven years old she is impatience and gets aggravated easily. She is a girl, dark hair, dark eyes, and small. She is straight forward with what she says and she is simple. She has flowed the rules but wonders what it feels like to break the rules so sometime she does something she is not supposed to do. When her brother is chosen for the most important job in the community she is happy for him.

“Immediately ,the rasping voice through the speakers had said. Leave your bicycles where they are.” page# 2

I chose this because it's the first time we get to read about a voice on a loudspeaker and the loudspeaker is used a lot through the story. It's also interesting because there is a voice that tells people what to do.

Is there anyone/anything like the loud speaker that makes you want to do something better or do something that is right?

1. What is the title of your book? Who is the author?

The Beauty and The Bodyguard by Marcy

2. What page are you on?

Pg. 172

3. Characterization:
For fiction readers:

The Character I will be talking about is the main character Lin Yi. His charcter is very confident, mature, and non-chalant about things in his current life. He isn’t described in detail too much, but he’s relatively handsome, while being incredibly strong from all the physical training done from a young age. I would describe him as a very relaxed character unless you piss him off, which would be doing something to someone he cares about, as he is very protective of his people. This character is pretty low-key the majority of the time, but when his friend was being bullied by some rich kids, he taught them a lesson not to mess with people that left them in the hospital.

4. QCQ: Quote, Comment, Question
-Quote:

“The car was full of cowards. Cowards, people who value their lives. They wouldn’t try anything when their boss had a gun pointed at him, but taking their guns away? They’d never let me do that. There’s no telling what they’d do as a last ditch effort.” Lin Yi explained. Pg.#38

-Comment:

I chose this piece of text because it shows that even though he has the capabilites to do something, he was prudent and cautious in this situation. These are both great qualities showing his understanding of the situation.

-**Question:
When was one time you were impeded in your work at home or at school/

2. What page are you on?
90

For fiction readers:
Identify one character in your book and talk about this character in depth. What is this character like? What are some physical traits? Some personality traits? What actions has this character taken so far? What does this character feel about events in the text?
Jordan Kell was the former captain of the expedition to New Earth, he is scared coming back to Earth because he is afraid the world council won't believe that a death wave that will wipe out all life on earth is coming. He's scared about how the population will react to that. He’s a leader, he can keep his head cool and knows how to take control. His physical traits are that he’s almost 200 years old yet he looks 60, he has silver hair and a moustache. He’s a very caring and sensitive character, but tough when he needs to be. He’s decided to come back to Earth, he’s decided to trust aliens. He’s unsure about his decisions because they aren't predictable

4. QCQ: Quote, Comment, Question
-Quote: Choose an excerpt from the text and share it here in quotation marks and with the page number.
Page 90. “I'm going to explain the situation to them, fully and honestly. Then we’ll see what they decide.”
-Comment: Explain why you chose this section of the text and what you think is interesting/provocative about it.
Because the main character thinks that rather than the most powerful government bodies on the planet and the solar system, that the public should decide instead. I found that interesting.
If you were in a situation where aliens had made contact with us and you could ask them 1 question of your liking, what would you ask?

5. Imagery and Symbolism
Find an image from the internet that captures the action, or your thoughts and feelings, about the pages that you read in the past 14 days (Challenge Option: Take the photo yourself!) and explain how this image connects to the book that you are reading.

The movie Arrival is about an alien species coming to Earth and I feel like that connects to my book because Jordan Kell (the main character) comes back to Earth with his Alien wife Aditi and the human population/ World council sees her as a threat/invasion. Which is basically the theme of arrival.

The book that I am reading is The masculine mandate by Richard D. Phillips and I am on page 17 of the book.
“Nobody respects a man who doesn’t work. It’d just as simple as that. It’s OK for a man to be dumb or ugly or evan a little unpleasant, So as long as he works hard.” A question that I have for this quote is what is the man works hard on doing something that he loves doing and not work on satisfying “God”.
The tone of the author in my book is well spoken and with lots of knowledge about christine religion. They are writing with the intention of telling the reader more about how men should be and to teach them more about the bible, Also the reader might feel like they are doing something wrong on the way that they are living because this book tells you how men and women should live and also they should worship god.

I'm reading Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman. I'm on page 42.

This novel is nonfiction.

As far as I have read, the author, Piper seems to show a scared and sarcastic but realistic tone. The best example of this tone in use would be in the quote," Larry had cooked me an elaborate dinner, and then we curled up in a ball on our bed, crying. Now we were heading much too quickly through a drab February morning toward the unknown. As we made a right onto the federal reservation and up a hill to the parking lot, a hulking building with a vicious looking triple layer razor wire fence loomed up. If that was minimum security, I was fucked." Piper shows her thoughts and keeps it realistic, yet she adds her scared perspective. She's scared to leave the world for 15 months, and she constantly shows it in her writing. In this quote, she uses words such as unknown and hulking to show her fear.

The quote," I stripped off all my jewelry- the seven gold ring; the diamond earrings Larry had given me for Christmas; the sapphire ring from my grandmother; the 1950s man's watch that was always around my wrist; all the earrings from all the extra holes that had so vexed my grandfather...'Lets do this.'" interests me. The main character is taking all of her jewelry off slowly realizing shes about to spend an entire year away from her "world." Yet even realizing that, she was still brave enough to just say lets do this.

If you had done something wrong, would you self surrender yourself to prison? Lose contact with your family and friends and everything close to you including your home, just to right your wrong? Is it worth it?

The image represents my worries and emotions I have for Piper's future in jail.

The book I am reading is called Lord of the flies by William Golding What is the tone of the author? The author gives off a mysterious gloomy adventurous tone to this book. How are they writing the piece and how do you think readers are meant to feel as they are reading the piece? I think when the reader reads this book the author is trying to make them feel the life of adventure and Power. Identify a section of the text and share it here that you feel demonstrates the author's tone. What is the tone of the author? "Jack's in charge of the choir. They can be what do you want them be?"
"Hunters."

Jack and Ralph smiled at each other with shy liking. The rest began to talk eagerly.

Page #20. Luke's family didn't dwell on what they all knew because Luke was the third born and he was actually an imposture and is illegal and was violating the population law quote 'with every breath he took and every bite of food he ate". And he could not go to school or anywhere because of what he was doing. and now he was finally at school. Luke's nickname to hide his real identity with the Name of Lee Grant, someone rich who got killed in a skiing accident who was wished to be still alive so Luke can use his nickname. Than someone in a room Luke was in using a warning tone of voice said, "young man" caught Luke and slid into the nearest vacant chair and had no books to study or any work to do.
