Pick one article from a credible NATIONAL (United States News!) news source and then do the following:

1. Title of article and author
2. Link to article
3. How do you know this is a credible news article?
4. Choose ONE of the following choices and write a paragraph of at least 3 sentences responding through the lens you've chosen:

~Agreement: Summarize some of the ideas in the story and explain why you like the ideas or not. Also, feel free to express your own personal ideas on the topic and how your ideas agree with or contrast to those in the report.

~Persuasion: Tell us what information in this report that you found convincing and which information you are suspicious of. If there are different opinions in the story, tell us who you agree with and why you agree with them. If you disagree with some opinion, explain which opinions you disagree with and why you disagree.

~ Surprise: Summarize the information in the story that surprises you and explain why it surprises you. Feel free to talk in some depth about what you used to think before you read this report.

5. Choose ONE of the following choices and write a paragraph of at least 3 sentences responding through the lens you've chosen:

~Affect: Explain the emotional effect of the story on you. Tell us why you responded in that way, using a lot of detail and background to do so.

~Critical Analysis (what’s missing): Describe information that you think is missing from this report. Explain what other details you think the story could or should have contained, and justify why you think that information should have been in the story. (another favorite)

~ Critical Analysis (bias): Describe any bias, prejudice or stereotype you see behind the story/column. Focus especially the text’s content or presentation. Also, speculate on why this story was written and on any underlying motivation for creating the story/column. (another good, critical question)

For credit for collaboration

1. In Columbine anniversary walkouts, students look to turn outrage to action
By: Collin Binkley

2.http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-school-walkouts-columbine-anniversary-20180420-story.html

3. How do you know this is a credible news article?
According to ASNE.ORG "Credibility is an indispensable asset of the Chicago Tribune Company." It also uses many national statistics and was recently written.

4. ~Agreement: The article talks about the recent school walkouts on April 20th about anti gun violence. I personally agree with many of these protests as enough is enough. There is so much gun violence today that It feels like it is time for change. Many will say that the 2nd amendment is a constitutional right, but the constitution was written a long time ago. Overall, I agree with the protests this article talks about.

5. ~Affect: This article has a large emotional affect on me. These mass shootings were horrible, sad, and maybe preventable. I feel like today shootings are getting out of hand and something needs to be done to fix them. This article motivates me and helps me to focus my ideas about gun rights.

When I think of credible, I think of a website that does not have any ".com" in the link. Why I think that a source that does not have ".com" in the link is credible is because .com links don't always use their own proof and also I was taught that a ".com" link is not always true by a lot of teachers.

I really like how in the first paragraph you used the counter argument and gave your reasoning why you disagree.
I love how you connected with the information in the article then gave your input about the issue.
Maybe it would be beneficial to include the protests the article talks about so the reader can understand what you agree with more clearly.

Warm:
1. I like how you connected it to you and what you think should be done so we don't need these walkouts any more.
2. I like how you validated your claim by saying what other people might say, but then saying why that is wrong in your opinion.

Cool:
1. I wish you added more about how the news source is credible.

According to https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/may/8/guns-n-roses-drops-controversial-song-forthcoming-/, Guns N' Roses was accused of using homophobic, Xenophobic, and racial Slurs in their lyrics. An example of racial slurs in the lyrics is, “Get outta my way / Don’t need to buy none of your gold chains today.” A homophobic slur is, “Immigrants and [expletives], they make no sense to me,”. This quote is an offensive term for homosexual men. Before I read the article, I was expecting slurs that were worse than what I read from the article and then was surprised that they weren't as bad as I thought they would be.

Hey Evanbear,

I really like how you chose an article with a unique topic and I liked the way you talked about it. It is very cool to hear about rude word choice in songs, and I really liked how you shared your opinion. Next time, maybe you could talk about why your source is reliable and follow the format a little better.

Thanks,

1. "Woman's runny nose was actually fluid from inside her brain" By Mark Lieber

2. https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/08/health/cerebrospinal-fluid-leak-nebraska/index.html

3. I know this is a credible news article because CNN is a reliable source.

4. Surprise:
I am surprised that the woman in the story thought that her problem was allergies or a bad cold. This surprises me because in the article, it says " "She would wake up in the morning after sleeping upright in a chair, and the whole front of her shirt was wet with fluid. It was a lot of fluid," said Dr. Christie Barnes, a rhinologist at Nebraska Medicine and a lead surgeon on the case." Before I read this article, I didn't even know that a condition like this existed.

5. Critical Analysis (what’s missing):
I think that the story could have included more information about why the woman had a hole in her skull after being in a car accident. I think this information should be included because then people can avoid getting into a similar situation. Even though this condition is rare, people should know about it.

You made a good point that it’s surprising. Why would someone think it was just allergies if she woke up with her shirt wet?
I like your critical analysi. the definatley should have explained why there was a hole in her brain.
Next time, I would add more about the article and everything that happened.
Good job, Rachel!

1.Needle by Needle, a Heroin Crisis Grips California’s Rural North

2.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/08/us/california-heroin-opioid.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fus&action=click&contentCollection=us®ion=rank&module=package&version=highlights&contentPlacement=8&pgtype=sectionfront

3. I know this news source to be a credible source because it is a large organization that majority of Americans rely on for credible news.

4. Summarizing, this story explained the dug use problem in the Humboldt county. This story provided the reader with information about the homeless community. The information that surprised me the most was the rate of opiod caused deaths in Humboldt county compared to the rates of the rest of the world. "In Humboldt County, the opioid death rate is five times higher than the state average, rivaling the rates of states like Maine and Vermont that have received far more national attention." This shocks me because it really is crazy how one county can have a higher avergae than the state average. It is really sad that so many people turn to needles. It is now a concern to the county officials that children and other citizens will find heroin needles in community parks. I think that this issue really need to be helped and that there are completely reasonable solutions. Sadly, you can't keep people from using drugs, but you can still try.

5. The emotional effect that this story has on me is that there are too many lives being lost to something as stupid as drugs. People need to learn to deal with their issues with a clear mind, because drugs don't fix anything. It is understood that these people are at such a large struggle in their lives with homelessness but there is still help other than drugs. I personally think that drug abuse, at that rate is ridiculous.

https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/Man-Dressed-as-Construction-Worker-Cashed-Stolen-Bonds-SDPD-482303541.html
NBC 7 News San Diego is credible because it is watched by many and in the article it uses quotes of real police organizations.
4. Choose ONE of the following choices and write a paragraph of at least 3 sentences responding through the lens you've chosen:

~ Surprise: Summarize the information in the story that surprises you and explain why it surprises you. Feel free to talk in some depth about what you used to think before you read this report.
In this report a man robbed houses all over Rancho Bernardo, and Poway between January and

May. He did this by breaking into rear sliding glass doors then searched the home for high-end items. 10 homes were stolen from so far. What surprises me is that someone can rob this many houses and not get caught. Police have his face and what he wears but it's still surprising he is still free.

~Critical Analysis (what’s missing): Describe information that you think is missing from this report. Explain what other details you think the story could or should have contained, and justify why you think that information should have been in the story. (another favorite)

Some things that are missing is the amount of the things he stole. Another thing missing is him being caught. After he is caught the story can be finished with his side of the story and or why he stole from the houses he stole from.

2. https://townhall.com/news/us/2018/05/10/human-remains-found-near-spot-where-suv-plunged-off-cliff-n2479569
3. I know this is a credible source because I cross referenced.

Surprise: This article is about a couple that drove off a cliff with their six adopted children in their car in March. Investigators say that the woman was drunk in the car and all the chilldren were drugged with drugs that made them drowsy. They also said that the cars driving log stated that before they flew off the cliff they stopped and then sped off, so the investigators are assuming that it was not an accident. The whole story real surprises me but especially the part where the couple that were permitted to adopt six children and then had this sudden erratic behavior to do something so evil.

Critical Analysis(what's missing): I feel like this story had most of the information needed for the reader to understand what happened. Something that I would have written is more about the couple and the children. Describing who the kids were, how old they were, how long they were put up for adoption. Then for the couple the same things, who they are, how their behaviors were, if they had a criminal records, etc.

Israel hits Iranian Targets in Syria as Shadow War Bursts into Open by Isabel Kershner
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/10/world/middleeast/israel-iran-syria-military.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=first-column-region®ion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news
I know that this source is credible because the New York Times is a news source that is one of the most popular in the U.S that a lot of people go to for there news. Also, the author uses facts and pictures to prove that the event happened, rather than just saying how the author feels about what happened.
Surprise
I found a lot in this article very surprising. One of those things was how many planes they sent compared to how many deaths there were. The article says there were dozens of airstrikes sent but yet on 23 people died. That surprised me because it seems like since they were aiming for all of Iran’s military infrastructure in Syria, more of Iran’s army would be killed. Another thing that surprised me was how Israel did not seem worried about any effects from their actions. Based on the way they responded it did not seem like they were super prepared for Iran to come back and fight them.
5. Critical Analysis (What’s Missing)
One thing that I think is missing from the article is what the Nuclear deal is and how big of a part America is. It mentions the Nuclear agreement, but doesn’t go into what it includes and how it affects the tension between Israel and Iran. I also think how Syria feels about all of this is missing in the article. The airstrikes from Israel are in Syria so I wish the author added if Syria was okay with it or sided with Iran.

4) When I read the part “ Staff fear the snake was stolen by a tour guest “ on the article I was surprised because I don't understand why someone would want to steal a snake from a museum. Was this tour guest planning to steal the snake if so? The staffs tried look at the camera that was facing towards the snake and it was really glitching so they weren't able to see who was the person that let out the snake but minutes before the snake had disappeared one of the tour guest asked to got the restroom and never came back.
5) This article gives the Opinion of the staffs and how they feel about Lemony Snicket missing and how they don't understand why and how this happened. Something that I think that is missing in this article is that they should add the clip of the camera that was facing towards the snake at least so that the reader can see what was going on at the moment this situation was happening also I clean the shit up added opinions of the public people such as visitors or other San Diego store owners near there to give their opinion of how they feel about the missing snake.

5. I think that more historical facts could have made this article more valid. All of the modern day politics are affected by the past. Especially in a 70-year-old war. I also think that more information about the pending peace treaty, and how it will affect the future of both countries.

What Keeps Xi Jinping Awake at Night
By Chris Buckley and Paul Mozur
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/11/world/asia/xi-jinping-china-national-security.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fasia&action=click&contentCollection=asia®ion=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=10&pgtype=sectionfront

I know that this article is credible because it cites Xi Jinping's book about his remarks on international security and moments of grave concern for the Chinese nation. It selects a few of the moments and adds further commentary.

This article is about China’s road to displace the US as the predominant global power. Xi Jinping is concerned about technology, military advancements, the internet, finacle risks, and pollution. Xi believes that technology is the only reason that the west is ruling the world. If China can become independent of western technology, they will be the superpower on earth. Military advancements are also among Xi’s concerns. The US is working on super fast deployment systems, and China needs a way to counter this. The internet is a very dangerous thing in China. Many American politicians believe that China can be taken down with the internet, but Xi knows that they must counter this. This is also leading to the issue of cyber warfare. Then, one of China’s biggest concerns is the economy. An economic collapse in the US would be devastating to China, perhaps hurting China more than the US. They are concerned about the US debt levels as well. Climate change is the final thing that Xi is concerned about. Climate change has the possibility to spark major unrest in China due to food shortages and such.

The article is very good in my opinion, but I feel as if it wasn’t focusing on other issues. For example, China is actually concerned about the rapid isolationism of the US. A recent destabilizing example is the Iran deal, which is just fueling the Sunni-Shia conflict in the middle east between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Although an isolationist US was expected in the long term due to the wish to isolate the US since post-WWII, Xi is not fond of a new power vacuum. This is surely an important concern for Xi and his government and should have been included as well. I do understand though that this was citing his book, and this is a new issue facing the Chinese nation.

Determining the Deadliest Freeway in San Diego County by Mari Payton and Tom Jones
https://www.nbcsandiego.com/investigations/Determining-the-Deadliest-Freeway-in-San-Diego-County-482104791.html
I know that NBC 7 is a credible source because it’s a news channel that’s also on TV which means the story has to be run by multiple people for accuracy.
This article is stating how many accidents have happened in the past decade. It shows how dangerous driving could be on the freeway. I was surprised to see that over 800 people have been killed in the last decade on the freeway due to car accidents caused by drunk, texting, eating all while driving. Before reading this, I knew that accidents happen often, but I didn’t realize that in the last decade it had been 868 deaths due to that.
A lot of accidents have happened on the interstate 5 which is a freeway my family uses often so this definitely affects me. It scares me to think that someone in a car nearby could be drunk while driving, or another example stated, and could lose control and hit my family.

Ex Chipotle Manager gets 8 million for wrongful termination
ABC News has always been a big corporation that people trust for news.

https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/chipotle-manager-million-wrongful-termination-55136417

Summarize: An ex chipotle manager won a lawsuit for wrongful termination and got 8 million dollars. She was accused of stealing over 600 dollars from the cash register and her bosses claimed they had it on footage, but when she asked to see it her bosses claimed it had been destroyed. What shocks me is that she was able to get 8 million out of that, especially since she "stole" 600 dollars.

Critical Analysis: They should put why 8 million dollars was rewarded and how they were able to give her all that money.
