Yeats5/11/2015 Food Quick Write:
Write a short, original writing about a time where food created a memory. Impress us with your creativity. GET SPECIFIC. Where were you when this food memory happened? What did it smell like? Taste like? Who was around? Was it the first time you tried the food? Second? Who else was there? Did the other people try the food too or was it just you? Activate all the senses! What did it sound like? What was its texture? I encourage you to think outside of the box and to write from an interesting perspective. Maybe you write from the perspective of the food and the food is judging you! Maybe you write from the perspective of the wrapper who misses the food after you've eaten it. Maybe you write in second person the entire time and make the reader experience your food experience! Think creatively! Take risks! Be bold! Some Carol Reminders I went through a lot of plays last night. A few things: 1. If you haven't finished, YOU'VE GOT TO FINISH! We are coming down to the wire! 2. At the end of your play, when you're finished, please put an indicator of some kind- END OF PLAY or THE END or END 3. I'm concerned about the number of characters in many of the pieces. Many of you never checked in with me about adding additional characters beyond the 3, and so you are failing to meet the requirements set up. If you need additional characters, please come see me during office hours to make your argument for why these characters are necessary. 4. Develop your characters. Make them each sound different. Each person speaks differently. How I speak is very different from how you speak. How I speak is very different from how Schwartz speaks. We are all unique, and your characters should be differentiated by their speech, just like we are. Let us get ot know EVERY single character you introduce. Otherwise, consider cutting them or combining them with a character you've already developed. 5. Many pieces are missing FTF Statements and Honest Emotion Anecdotes. Get on this! We need to see this at the top of the plays. It helps us help you better because we can figure out what you are TRYING to do even if you're not quite doing it yet. 6. The driving question of this project is: "How can we connect with our humanity and convey it honesty through writing". I'm going to remind you of Andrew Stanton's cardinal rule of storytelling: MAKE ME CARE. Even when you're being funny, there needs to be a point. Everything you write should be helping us develop feelings for a character in your piece, MAKE ME CARE. Ask that of yourself for each line of dialogue and for each character description, for each stage direction. Are you making us care?
