1. Sheriff’s Department Will Review Rebecca Zahau Case
By City News Service, KPBS News
2. http://www.kpbs.org/news/2018/apr/16/sheriffs-department-will-review-rebecca-zahau-case/
3. KPBS is a credible source because it is a org. and is not opinionated.
The sheriff's department reevaluate the Rebecca Zahau case due to new evidence. Rebecca Zahau allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at a Coronado mansion in 2011. Her boyfriend Jonah Shacknai's 6-year-old son, fell from a two story building and died five days later. Jonah's brother, Adam Shacknai was accused of beating, sexually assaulting and tying Zahau's hands and feet then put a noose around her neck and threw her off a balcony. this story is quite crazy i have so many questions to why Adam Shacknai would kill his brothers girlfriend? and what relevance does the death of the boy have to the story?
This artical is a developing story. That will be updated as new information becomes available. I felt no Biases in this article they where just reporting on the news. No point was argued more or less then the other. They just reported the current event.

I like how you added questions that you wondered while reading the article. It added another layer that led me to wonder about your questions! Also, I like how you added that the news source is not opinionated, because I feel like that is a very important aspect that a news source needs to have. The only critique I have is that maybe you could give critique to the article. I'd like to hear your thoughts about what the writer could've done better overall.

1. 1,231 Layoffs for Qualcomm San Diego Offices
By: NBC 7 Staff and SDBJ Staff
2.https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/Layoffs-Underway-at-Qualcomm-480251723.html
3. NBC is one of the worlds biggest Television Corporations and this article was co written by the SDBJ which is a source with a lot of local knowledge.
4. Surprise
I am very surprised to hear that Qualcomm is downsizing. Qualcomm seems seems like a very large company that would stay large, it is even the sponsor of the biggest stadium in the area. According to the article, Qualcomm currently employs 13,000 citizens locally and they are going to layoff 1200 employees, that is shocking.
5.Affect
Qualcomm is the largest employer in San Diego, and this article had a large emotional effect on me. My friend's dad works at Qualcomm and I was wondering if her dad lost his job. It's always sad to see the largest employer in your city downsize because job loss is sad. Overall, this article is super cool info but pretty sad.

What I really like is that you used specific data and information from the article.

One thing I might add is some backstory on why they are downsizing or any motives on why they might downsize.

I like the research you put in to make sure that the source was credible.
I also like how you listed how many people they employed and how the 1200 they layed off is really a lot for that company.
I think to make it better you could have given some evidence from the article directly.

1.How A New San Diego Police Division is Tackling Homelessness, Quality of Life Issues
2.http://www.kpbs.org/news/2018/apr/19/how-new-sdpd-division-tackling-homelessness-qualit/
3. I know this a credible news article because i cross referenced it with multiple other websites that had the same information and kpbs is very known.

Surprise: This article is about how a new San Diego police division is trying to do something about homelessness. They are giving medical help to homeless people and many other things. I am very surprised that this wasn’t a bigger deal. How there weren't many people talking about it, I don't know if it is just me but I didn't hear about it until doing this assignment. I am also very surprised on how there aren’t many volunteers helping just mostly policeman.

Critical Analysis (what’s missing): Something that I feel that is missing from this story is some input from some people that the division has already helped. Because this division has been up and helping people for quite some time they could have added some stories and other things like that showing that this act has been successful.

Oceanside Earth Day festival draws thousands

http://www.thecoastnews.com/oceanside-earth-day-festival-draws-thousands/

I know this is a credible news source because It has an author and has a publication date. This is an article from the coast news group which is a very well read news paper all thoughrought southern north county.

Agreement: One point that the article made that I agree with is that A greener oceanside is a better oceanside. I personally am a resident of Oceanside, CA and also am very passionate about environmental sustainability which this article emphasizes. My thoughts about sustainability is that we should try to preserve our beautiful earth for as long as possible to have it for as many future generations as we can. I also believe that it just as much work to trash our earth then to care for it. Showing thought about something as simple about an eco-friendly lifestyles really shows character and a mindful human. Oceanside puts on this annual festival to draw communal attentional to this issue and to offer a venue to those who share a similar lifestyle and beliefs to celebrate something as breathtaking as our mother, earth.

Affect: This story has a very substantial emotional impact on me. I try my best to make decisions that will benefit our planet, all though I try not to make excuses, i try to be accepting of the fact that I am not perfect and every decision I make is not going to positively affect the earth. This article makes me hopeful for the future. I would still like to see people doing more instead of saying more.

I love that you weren't afraid to get personal in your writing. It was really moving to hear about your love for Oceanside, and it makes me realize how important it is to protect our earth. I also love how you even suggested how we can improve our earth by "doing more instead of saying more."

One thing I think you could improve is your written communication. I saw that you forgot to capitalize an I, and there are a couple of spelling errors like "thoughrought" instead of throughout.

1.Why it Seems Like Everyone is Angry with You by Heather Murphy

2.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/24/science/reading-neutral-faces.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fscience&action=click&contentCollection=science®ion=rank&module=package&version=highlights&contentPlacement=2&pgtype=sectionfront

3. This is a credible news article because the New York Times is a trusted and popular newspaper company, and you can see the person who wrote the article. They also link their many sources throughout the article.

4. One idea in the story was that children who grew up in household with high conflict might have a harder time reading facial expressions. I agree with this, because if the children's parents are angry a lot, their neutral expression might seem like a happy expression to the child. Another idea was that as a child, if they grew up in a household with lots of fighting and their parent’s facial expression appears angry to them, that it might become a trigger for the child go to their room. I also agree with this, because going to your room is a common punishment if parents are angry with their children. So if their parents are angry a lot, going to your room might be a common act. If they were to see that their parents are angry, they might go to their room straight away because that is what they are used to.

5. I think they should have added a personal story about one of the people who came to participate in the experiment. For example, it could be about a child (or adult) who lived a hard life growing up with lots of fighting, and how they have overcome their common misconception of facial expressions. I feel like this would have made the reader more interested and feel more empathy towards the person, and also may help someone who is going through a hard time with misreading facial expressions who was reading the article.

you were right as they should have used a personal story. That would have made it interesting and you would hear about it first hand.

Hey Sami

Your article was very interesting and I agreed that the way that many children's grow up is sad because your childhood memories would carry with you your whole life and Sadly in many cases many parents treat their kids as they were treated in there childhood and if they don't grow up with a good experience and good Expressions their kids are victims of their past. I strongly agree with you that they should add a personal story of a parent or adult that had an alike childhood I feel that this would make that article more interesting by yeah many people are not willing to share their childhood experience because they are upset.

4 Big Problems the Film Industry Needs to Fix Immediately — CinemaCon 2017
By: Graham Winfrey

http://www.indiewire.com/2017/03/4-problems-the-movie-business-needs-to-fix-immediately-hollywood-1201798050/

Its from a website that is about media and news in the media, the article has sources where it helps prove what's going on. It was written just about a year ago so somethings have changed. Also it quotes Dave Hollis who is head of distribution for disney.

The ideas This article covers is very interesting and very relevant to the film industry. The first point it covers is attracting millennials to ] movie theaters. Millennials are mainly attracts the movie theaters that have reclining seats, premium sounds, a large selection of food and drinks and reserved seating. Another point to talk about is being smarter with remakes, they don't want to remake a movie that no one was interested in the first place so why we're-make it now. They use the movie The Lone Ranger from the 1950s as an example because Disney remade it in 2013 and barely made 90 million dollars at the box office when It had a 225 million dollar budget. It also mentioned about home viewing these movies and more people would want to watch them at home then go to movie theater. The last point it talks about how whitewashing casting and how casts need more diversity. This article really gave good points on how to save the movie business.

As someone who wants to work in the film technology field, I do need to know how the whole media and popularity of movies will be. I need to know more about the production side and articles like these really teach me, so in the future I can use them as knowledge to grow and learn from them.

Maya,
I like that you chose a unique article and that it is something that you connect with. I do agree with a lot of the points made, like the remakes point. You did a great job summarizing the points in short sentences that explained the whole concept.

My cool would be that the article should include data to support their claims, like if millennials are really attracted to reclined seating, or if remakes are a bad choice to do.

Gio :)

Hello, I must say that your first paragraph shows a lot of good evidence suggesting that film industries need to start listening to their audience more. I enjoy the fact that you decided to find an news article about something you are interested in doing in the future. Learning about your dreams jobs is very valuable.
I must ask: If you were to join the film technology field in the future. Would this information affect you lightly or heavily?

How Parkland Students Feel About Their New Mandatory Clear Backpacks by Dianne Gallagher, Emanuella Grinberg and Paul P. Murphy.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/02/us/marjory-stoneman-douglas-clear-backpacks/index.html

1. I know this is credible because CNN is a trusted news source and they are interviewing kids that experienced the shooting.

Agreement: CNN talks to kids going back to Majority Stoneman Douglas after the shooting and how they feel about the clear backpacks. Most of the kids they interviewed said that clear bags do nothing, which i agree with. The students said that the clear bags are sacrificing their privacy and are ineffective, while metal detectors would work better. The shooter wasn't even attending the school, so why should they put clear backpacks? One student said that people could still conceal a weapon between papers and binders in a clear backpack, while a metal detector would pick it up. In the article it also said that clear backpacks won't prevent weapons getting into dangerous hands, which i also agree with. Laws would prevent that.

Affect: i think this would affect every student in America. Safety against a shooter shouldn't even be a concern while at a school. Students shouldn't have to fear going to a place to learn.

The name of the article is Coronado Marine Posthumously Awarded Silver Star by Bridget Naso https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/Coronado-Marine-Posthumously-Awarded-Silver-Star--480758711.html

I know this is a trusted news source because it showed videos and pictures to prove that it happened and it is up to date from It being actually being posted today with a legitimate author.
In this story I chose less of a conflict but more of a celebration towards the accomplishment of a certain san diego natives brave acts. In the story It was talking about a lieutenant and his men getting ambushed but him being able to slip through and save peoples lives. I really like how this news writer chose because of all the bad things going around in the world to have a moment to commemorate someone just to tell people that the world isn't as screwed up as everyone thinks for a man to save lives and not only get a high five or a thanks but to have received a medal and all the respect in the world. I felt like if I was this writer I would have included how he saved the peoples lives for me to get into more thought about this story. The missing parts left in this story are the human emotion of it because when reading article I connect to mostly an emotional stand point instead of just he saved there lives but his heart was pounding of sadness for those already lost trying to get these 4 men back to their wives like he couldn't do for the rest or something like that. But the only thing I didn't like at all about this article is the actual hero but the hero sister because it took 51 years for America to decide to give a medal for a heroic action after his life has already passed and wasn't able to get that recognition earlier.

Also, I love how invested you are in learning more and more about a specific story.

A piece of critique would be general punctuation, capitalization, and grammar as I saw multiple non-capitalized pronouns and missing commas.

Man hit and killed by train in Oceanside
By Marie Estrada
https://www.10news.com/news/pedestrian-hit-and-killed-by-train-in-oceanside

I know this is a credible source because the article uses actual statements by the Amtrak owner after the person was hit with the train.

This story is about how a man was hit by a train in Oceanside at 8pm on Tuesday in Metrolink Orange County. What surprised me was that the Amtrak owner was very open to telling everyone what happened and how when they had to shut down the track they offered all the normal riders alternative transportation. Before I thought when the train shuts down the people who usually ride don't get any help but I was wrong.

The things that are missing are the events before the man was hit and why he was hit. I believe we need more details like cameras to find out if it was intentional or an accident. That information would help the story be understood further.

I'd like to know if this was the only time this happened? or have accidents on the metrolink been seen before?

City starts website for “positive stories” by Lauryn Schroeder

http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/watchdog/sdut-inside-san-diego-2016jan22-htmlstory.html

It is by San Diego Union Tribune, which is a popular and credible news source for all of San Diego!

Agreement: I honestly feel like a website for positive news stories is a wonderful idea. Many news sources only focus on negative stories, which they think are the most important. Even though those are the stories that will catch an eye, or get more views, it is still very important for people to see the good and positive in our city.

Critical Analysis: I think that instead of creating a seperate website for all the positive news stories, they should combine them onto their main website. People are more likely to go to the main source of the San Diego Union Tribune, and if there are positive articles in addition to the negative ones there would be more views overall. News does not have to be all the bad stuff happening locally, because that is not all that’s important. Reading something positive might make the reader smile, and make their whole day.

1. I really enjoyed reading about what you agree with. It was very interesting and I think I could definitely agree with that too.
2. Your critical analysis is very good. I think you made a fantastic point about how many people are more likely to go onto the actual news website instead of a separate on based on positive things.

1. I think you could elaborate more on why you know it is a credible source since you basically stated your opinion. I could say that Infowars is a credible and popular new source for global news, but that simply isn't true. This is an extreme example, but the point is that you could state your opinion on any new source.

1. California Tortoise With Cracked Shell Gets $4,000 Repair by The Associated Press.
2. http://www.kpbs.org/news/2018/apr/19/california-tortoise-cracked-shell-gets-4000-repair/
3. This is a credible news article because KPBS is a popular, well known, and trusted news source throughout San Diego. You are also able to see the press who wrote the article and are able to contact them, which is better than it being an anonymous source.

4. The parts of the article I found convincing were the parts with real evidence used by the writer. They mention the specific organization that studied the tortoise and examined what might have happened. They also said the specific fund that gave money to help the tortoise, Spirit Fund, and the exact amount they gave, which is $4,000. The information that is a little suspicious would be the parts where they briefly describe what the owner said what happened. It would be better if they used exact quotes from the owner of the tortoise.

5. I think they should have added more quotes from the owner of the tortoise. As a reader, I would like to hear how the owner felt about the procedure and why he decided to go through with it. Maybe how they felt about the tortoise and what makes it so special. This would make the reader more interested in the article and care more about wildlife.

Title: Supporters, opponents to speak on Del Mar fairgrounds gun show
Authors: Jermaine Ong and Allison Horn
Link: https://www.10news.com/news/supporters-opponents-to-speak-on-del-mar-fairgrounds-gun-show-042418
It is a credible source because it is a well known news channel.
Surprise: This news article surprised me was that the left is now trying to ban gun shows. This surprises me because the show has been running for 28 years and just now they are trying to ban it. That show that people are acting to much on their own emotions instead of trying to be rational. Also it surprises me because every year the show brings in about $100,000 so by banning it would bring down the local economy a lot.
Affect: this story kinda angers me because it just shows how ignorant the far left is about anything related to guns. From looking at a lot of things it seems at this point they are all acting on their emotions instead of being rational. One of the arguments that they use is that banning guns will bring down crime which is entirely wrong. In most cases it is actually the opposite and even if they ban guns it wont stop all crime.

1. The Golden State Killer
2. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/26/us/golden-state-killer.html
3. The New York Times has a credible reputation with news
4. Surprise: Summarize the information in the story that surprises you and explain why it surprises you. Feel free to talk in some depth about what you used to think before you read this report.

The Golden State Killer was charged with committing more than 50 rapes and 12 murders all across California during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Just this week 72 year old James DeAngelo was arrested by police on Tuesday. What surprised me was that he was able to get away with committing all these crimes and able to live a normal life many years later. James DeAngelo was one of the most notorious killers in America during the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. I had no knowledge of this series of crimes neither heard anything about the killer until I saw it come up on the news, I hadn't thought much of it before until reading the report.
5. Affect: Explain the emotional effect of the story on you. Tell us why you responded in that way, using a lot of detail and background to do so.
I feel like this is very personal with a lot of people and I can just resonate with that because it honestly is pretty frightening that he committed so many crimes yet he hadn't been caught until years later. The article spoke about people sleeping with weapons or buying firearms because of The Golden State Killer, I know anyone wouldn't want to go to bed at night knowing they might wake up being beaten or raped.

Your write up is really good. You gave the audience a small summary in great detail by adding the dates and accurate information. As well with finding a credible source. Does this article remind you of any other articles you have read in the past if so how and how can you connect it to this one?

DNA brings arrest of ex-police officer in Golden State serial killer case after decades
Don Thompson and Brian Melly
Link:
http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/nation-world/ct-golden-state-killer-arrest-20180425-story.html

How do I know it is a credible news article?
The San Diego Union-Tribune is one of the most well-known newspapers in the US. The article is also written by the Associated Press, which is one of the most reputable and well-known fact-based newspapers in the U.S. In the article, it quotes many local officials such as the Sacramento District Attorney. With this information, it is very clear that this is a credible news article.

Surprise:
In the report, the authors used many details to surprise the reader. Don Thompson and Brian Melly describe Joseph James DeAngelo (the Golden State killer) in immense detail. They describe how he lived a completely normal life outside of the crimes he committed (12 murders, 45 rapes, and more than 125 residential burglaries). For the majority of the time, Joseph James DeAngelo was a police officer while committing his horrendous crimes. He was then charged with theft and fired from the police force which led DeAngelo to find work at the Save Mart Supermarket supply chain center. What surprises me the most about this is that the Sacramento Sheriff Department did not know about DeAngelo until last week. They have had thousands of tips about the Golden State Killer, but none of them were about DeAngelo. That is making me think… Many of those reports must have been jokes. Isn’t that sick that someone could make a joke about someone who was that cruel?

Affect:
The effect this article has had on me is very immense. It’s quite sad that it has taken so long to find someone so evil. DeAngelo did not spare anyone. He raped people ages 13-41. The author talks about how normal of a life DeAngelo lived when he was not committing his crimes. He was someone who was trusted by the community. He was someone that people would go to for help. It is so crazy that this has happened right outside of where we live and that he was so trusted by the community he was in.

1. I like how you were very descriptive with how it was a credible source like talking about the associative press and how it’s one of the most reliable sources in the U.S. I also liked how descritibe you were on who DeAngelo was and what he did while he commuted all of those horrible crimes. Your opinion in the text brings a very empathetic feel on why this was a very sad topic that someone who seemed trusted and kind could be so evil and cruel but no one even knew a thing.

Great Job Ian!

KPBS is a trusted news source organization and the article has listed authors
Surprise:
Apparently, there is a “Nature Challenge” this year against Los Angeles and San Francisco to see whose citizens can document their city’s wildlife the most, and it’s lead by San Diego Natural History Museum. Scientist have access to the photos for research. I’ve never heard of this and thought it was so interesting, especially that scientist can even discover new species- though it’s rare, it has happened.
Affect:
I’ve always been connected to nature ever since I was a kid and I really wanted to be a vet or a zookeeper as a child. I used to pride myself on how much time I spent outside and the cool critters I would catch and freak out my family when I brought them inside. I think this challenge is really cool and beneficial since it gets people to appreciate wildlife and getting them outside.

Current Events #1 Due April 27th, 2018
4/18/2018 29 Comments

Pick one article from a credible LOCAL news source and then do the following:

1. Judge deals big setback to trump ‘Dreamers’ program by the associative press.
2. http://www.kpbs.org/news/2018/apr/25/judge-deals-big-setback-trump-dreamers-program/
3. How do you know this is a credible news article? Kpbs is a nonbiast source and I cross referenced this topic.
4. Choose ONE of the following choices and write a paragraph of at least 3 sentences responding through the lens you've chosen:

~Agreement: Summarize some of the ideas in the story and explain why you like the ideas or not. Also, feel free to express your own personal ideas on the topic and how your ideas agree with or contrast to those in the report.

~Persuasion: Tell us what information in this report that you found convincing and which information you are suspicious of. If there are different opinions in the story, tell us who you agree with and why you agree with them. If you disagree with some opinion, explain which opinions you disagree with and why you disagree.

~ Surprise: Summarize the information in the story that surprises you and explain why it surprises you. Feel free to talk in some depth about what you used to think before you read this report. In this article, it talks about DACA and the meager legal reasoning behind the disallowment of DACA. Judge John Bateson ruled that this program should have a renewal. It would also start to accept new applicants because of the deferred action on the childhood arrivals program. But although Obama administration started DACA by execrutive action the trump justice department cannot terminate it because it is still protected by the administrated procedure act. The Washington judge gave the government 90 days before it takes effect.

5. Choose ONE of the following choices and write a paragraph of at least 3 sentences responding through the lens you've chosen:

~Affect: Explain the emotional effect of the story on you. Tell us why you responded in that way, using a lot of detail and background to do so.

~Critical Analysis (what’s missing): Describe information that you think is missing from this report. Explain what other details you think the story could or should have contained, and justify why you think that information should have been in the story. (another favorite)
I fell that this article should obtain the amount of DACA people were affected by trump disallowing the act of DACA. Or what percentage of people were affected by the disallowment of DACA. I feel that this would bring more of an inside look into what it was like for people who couldn’t get the benefits out of this program and how they have benefitted or not benefitted from this ruling.

~ Critical Analysis (bias): Describe any bias, prejudice or stereotype you see behind the story/column. Focus especially the text’s content or presentation. Also, speculate on why this story was written and on any underlying motivation for creating the story/column. (another good, critical question)

1. Golden State Killer caught using relative's DNA from genealogy websites, prosecutors say
By Nicole Darrah

2. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/04/26/golden-state-killer-caught-using-relatives-dna-from-genealogy-websites-prosecutors-say.html

3. I know that it's credible because It has an author when it was published and has a video about the issue. Not only that it also has pictures and quotes from interviews with the authorities.

4.What really surprised me was that this case lasted for 24 years and that they were able to pinpoint it till now with our modern tech. It's really surprising how our tech has improved so much over the years and how it can solve problems way easier.

5. They weren't able to catch this criminal who murdered 12 people and raped 45 raped and more than 160 robberies. This criminal was lost out there in the world for more than 24 years and all of the things he accomplished. The man is now 72 years old and he used to be a police officer. The article said that that is how he knew how to cover up his tracks really well. He also changed his methods of doing his deeds so the authorities wouldn't be able to pinpoint the rimes to him.

Title: Prehistoric humans once battled giant sloths
Author: Ariel Scotti
Link: http://beta.nydailynews.com/news/national/prehistoric-humans-battled-giant-sloths-article-1.3956089

The New York Daily News is a credible source as it has been nominated for multiple awards and is one of the most circulated newspapers in the US. Cross referencing with other new articles proves that this article is credible.

~Persuasion: In this specific report, prehistoric bones were discovered in New Mexico. From the placements of the footprints and bones, the research team came to conclusion of a battle between the humans and the sloths. The placement of the footprints and the kinds of footprints prove and convince me that prehistoric sloths did roam the Earth at the same time as humans. Though the humans might've fought to against the sloths to survive, it doesn't excuse the idea of "flailing circles". The behavior of other animals doesn't influence the sloths defensive actions.

~Critical Analysis: This type of article is very suspicious and prone to disbelief. In order to get a fascinating discovery across, you have to
include an accurate photo to show the discovery. If the site is restricted, then the footprints shown in the article is enough. Using proper terms for the species would improve the professionalism and the knowledge behind the claim or statement. Lastly, something crucial in proving this would be a reconstruction of the bones or the bones of the sloths in general.

4) In the article they added a statement That Rose Anna sharp with never again California saying that " There are 40 gun shops in the community and 3-4 big box stores selling guns; we don't need to have gun shows,".I agree with not having the gun show because the show will be a bad example how it's ok to own a gun.

5) in the article it talks about how students book before the board Tuesday afternoon meeting and discussed the impact of the reason school shootings. I agree with this statement because if they're noticing all the danger that the guns are causing because they end up I'm in responsible hands of teenagers and on prepare adult why would they decide to have a gun show? If they end up agreeing on having the show it would make me feel unsafe that there is going to promote such a dangerous objects that could kill an innocent child wanting to accomplish their dreams. In my opinion I think that instead of thinking of promoting guns that they should find me a way to make guns illegal and how to make schools in my opinion I think that instead of thinking of promoting guns that they should find a way to make guns in illegal and how to make schools a safer educating place where every student could feel safe to go to a place they could take a learn how to successful and make the right choices.

I found this article to be surprising as I read how people from all lenses of political views came to pay their respects. The reason I was surprised by this is because of all the political tension going on over these past years, people put aside there biased to pay respects. Along with that, while reading this article and listening to others talk about this situation I have researched more as to what Barbara Bush has done for america and the world so far.

by Phil Helsel
2.https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/toronto-officer-who-held-his-fire-after-van-attack-says-n869146
3. Because this article came from nbc news and I know that they are a credible source for news because they have been delivering news to us for a long time. If they were to put out misinformation they would lose their credibility because they are a very credible news source.
4. This has a emotional effect to me because I care very deeply about this top and it's sad that we get knews saying that a officer finally didn’t kill the youth again. It just goes to show how much officers kill innocent youth just because they suspects. Officers have no constraints and that's why they kill people when they are not supposed to. I can connect to this because usually when officers kill people its people of color and it makes me think what if this could happen to me all just because of the color of my skin and my gender. Police brutality has no place one this world and should not be tolerated, Usually nothing happens to these officers and that's why it keeps happening.

4. Choose ONE of the following choices and write a paragraph of at least 3 sentences responding through the lens you've chosen:
Surprise: The information in the story that surprised me was when James Shaw Jr. “found the sudden and very public surge of respect and gratitude uncomfortable.” I found this to be surprising news because after heroic acts on saving many lives usually people would feel good and some sort of accomplishment. He states that he acted in a blink of a second. He also states that “The shooting played out to quickly to contemplate acts of heroism.” James realized that he saved other peoples lives but he just had a mindset of saving himself, and that he was just trying to live.

5. Choose ONE of the following choices and write a paragraph of at least 3 sentences responding through the lens you've chosen:
Affect: The story personally affected me by me trying to put myself in James’s shoes and try to feel how he was feeling. Doing something as brave as he did I'm Not sure I would have reacted the same way he did. Based on what he said the patients that he saved were also greatly thankful for what he did. If I were to see it the way the patients saw it I would owe my life to James and thank him over and over again.

By: Rachel Bianco (ABC 10 news San Diego)

2.
https://www.10news.com/news/poway-students-call-for-improved-school-safety-more-mental-health-resources

3. I know that this a credible news article because it has been going around since 1943 and has recently gained a large audience.

4.

~Agreement: Summarize some of the ideas in the story and explain why you like the ideas or not. Also, feel free to express your own personal ideas on the topic and how your ideas agree with or contrast to those in the report.

In this article it talks about students in the Poway unified school district are demanding action on mental health resources. And the recent school shootings are affecting students mentally. Recently students have been asking, “Is my school next, am I next?”. And my opinion is that there should be mental health resources so that students have someone to talk to. I feel like there should be more counselling options so students aren’t scared of going to school because of the tragic things that have been going on recently.

5. Choose ONE of the following choices and write a paragraph of at least 3 sentences responding through the lens you've chosen:

~Affect: Explain the emotional effect of the story on you. Tell us why you responded in that way, using a lot of detail and background to do so.

This is a emotional story because I feel like the recent school shootings have affected students emotionally. And this really affects students mentally because they are scared for their safety. And it’s scary to think of something so serious like this because the students can get scared of the safety for themselves and the ones they love.

Passenger Who Survived A Fatal Flight Is Suing Southwest Airlines by Sasha Ingber
https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/04/27/606652650/passenger-who-survived-a-fatal-flight-is-suing-southwest-airlines
An article from the National Public Radio, it is about a lawsuit that was documented about a lady who was in an almost fatal flight. It is an .org site as well. NPR is a trusted news source for every situation. Suing may have not been the best way to get the company and manufacturers of the plane to start rethinking there plans in airplane check ups, but normally people don’t have many other choices. It is a really bad thing that the plane company could not identify what caused the plane to have such a sudden failure. I agree with the suer that they should investigate better than before. Taking action for this is not frowned upon, it shouldn’t be the businesses that decide how we live, we should push them to be more safe and better for people of all types.
It is missing what the airline had to say about the situation. How they responded to the claims and how they dealt with public relations. The article does write one thing the airline said. That's how it would be ridiculous to inspect every fan on a plane’s engine. What is missing is more claims, theories of what could of gone wrong. Information on how they plan on preventing this from happening in the future is also abstained, but it is entirely possible that the airline had nothing to say about that topic. More info about what the airline said and is doing would make the article a little bit more hopeful for future flights. It is crucial that people know what is truly going on so they can make fair judgments about companies.

Your response is well written overall, the subject matter is very interesting, and I appreciate your vocabulary (meaning I like how you used the word "abstained" because I like that word). You did make a few spelling and grammar issues. "Rethinking there plans" should be "rethinking their plans" and the "an .org site" bothers me a little bit because it makes sense on paper but when I read it in my head its "dot org site" so it doesn't make sense verbally so I hate it. Love u though, you're a cool guy. I'm afraid of giving criticism. Thank you and goodnight.

1. County Health Officials: San Diego Flu Season Is Over by Matt Hoffman
2. http://www.kpbs.org/news/2018/apr/26/two-county-flu-deaths-reported-last-week/
3. Because not only is it a well renowned news source, but the author includes their name in the article, which usually means the information being presented is accurate.

Okay, I thought the flu season would NEVER end. It lasted for months, and apparently there were 341 deaths related to the flu this year! What the heck! I never thought you could die from having the flu but now I know that you can, and that's so strange to me.

It reminds me of the measles outbreak we had in California years ago, and that sparked a lot of conversation about vaccines, and it absolutely blows my mind that there are people out there that think that vaccines are detrimental to your health or somehow cause autism. All the science is on the table about how a vaccine works, yet some people choose not to vaccine themselves or their child, and that puts people at risk.

Anyways, I'm so glad that flu season is finally over. It makes me wonder why it was so bad this year, because the article doesn't say.

Title: Bill Cosby guilty on all three counts in indecent assault trial

Author: Uploaded by the Fox 5 Digital Team

Link: http://fox5sandiego.com/2018/04/26/bill-cosby-found-guilty-on-all-counts/

This article shares information confirmed through multiple other sources. The article also does not get into any opinion based information, and just shares things we can find through other sources as well.

Agreement: From this article, I see a situation that I definitely do not agree with the actions of, but can somewhat feel some sort of empathy for. I feel that Cosby’s sentence is a bit too much for his age. At the age of 80, I feel that putting someone in prison for as long as his sentencing is would be letting them possibly die in prison. Overall, I think that there could be an alternative punishment, such as therapy and temporary house arrest until he is proven to be completely recovered from his state at the time.

Affect: The story made me feel personally disappointed, but I felt as if I had to see it from both points of view. You can see in the article that this event occurred almost 15 years ago, so it seems reasonable to me that people can change over that amount of time. In total, I feel as if Cosby should have a reduction from what his sentencing currently is from the information provided.

Gun control activists speak out against Del Mar gun show http://www.cbs8.com/story/38027593/gun-control-activists-set-to-speak-out-against-del-mar-gun-show
CBS News 8 Team
CBS News 8 is a credible source because the website is organized and the information the article is giving me seems truthful. CBS News is also one of the largest news channels on TV.
Agreement: The article I read is about gun control activists speaking out against the Del Mar gun show for an end to the gun shows. This actually wasn’t the first time it’s been brought to the board to end the gun show held anually at Del Mar fairgrounds. I agree with the gun control activists. Gun shows glorify guns when really we need to be talking about the effect it’s had on people, especially in recent months.
Affect: I did not know that gun shows were still a thing in California. It upsets me that people are still holding gun shows after all the school shootings that have happened and sadly, might continue to happen. I just wish people would stop so we can all come to our school day without worrying it’s out last. These gun shows make shooting, in any case, seem fun. Sure, you might be having fun feeling like you have all this power. But when is the power too much? What kind of extents do we need to reach to make it stop?

Author is Joe Napier and the title of the article is VC Fire Protection District Public Safety and Service Message – Rattlesnake Safety
https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/vc-fire-protection-district-public-safety-and-service-message-rattlesnake-safety/
How I know this is a credible news source is because this is a actual thing going on in Valley center. If you didn't live in Valley center and get the message you could tell its real because it has a author, date of when it was published, and it uses real statistics.
Agreement: Some of the ideas this article shares is that watch out for the snakes and be especially careful with rattlesnakes. They also talk about how you can keep them out of your yard. I agree with this idea because well if you don't watch out for these snakes they can potentially kill you if not careful.
Critical Analysis (What's missing): I guess some information they could have added that they did would be where these snakes are most found. If they added this the community would be able to prevent more snake bites for happening by avoiding the areas the snakes are most found in. They probably could have added stuff that said how to keep your children or pets safe from snakes.

1: San Diego home prices up 7.6 percent in a year by Phillip Molnar
2:http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/business/real-estate/sd-fi-case-shiller-20180424-story.html
3: I know this is credible because the article lists an author, and does not use any forms of bias to persuade the reader into believing that home prices have risen. Also, the author uses factual evidence and quotes from professionals that are in the realm of real estate.
4: Agreement
The article summarizes how the average home price in San Diego over the past year has risen. It shows how San Francisco and Los Angeles were two of the major cities that attributed to this growth. This makes sense to me because those are the two cities you think of when you think California, and as less homes are being sold because of the need for homes, they can up the prices in those areas. Another idea in the text is how job growth has increased the homes values. This also makes sense because the cities with better jobs and economies are places families want to be, making the home prices rise. Overall, because of Californiaś climate, economy, family friendly cities, and the demand for homes, the prices will rise.

5: Affect
This story affected me because I live in San Diego and plan on staying in California when I get older. Seeing how San Diego prices have risen is sort of scary when you think about how much bigger the prices could be in 15 years. Also, the article mentions how home prices have risen in other Californian cities. Los Angeles was one of them and those prices rose as well showing how Southern California is a place a lot of people want to live.

1)The controversy surrounding the death of British toddler Alfie Evans, explained
by:Tara Isabella Burton

2)https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/4/27/17286168/alfie-evans-toddler-uk-explained

3) This is a credible news source because Vox is peer reviewed source. It is also updated daily on any new information.

4) This article is about a 14 month old toddler named Alfie Evans. He has a degenerative brain disease. This disease makes it very hard to live without modern medicine like life support. Earlier this week the UK health system decided that Alfie was never going to get better, so keeping alive would be a “waste of resources”. The government decided that they would take him off life support and put their money somewhere else. I think that this is extremely wrong. Why should the government get to dictate someone's life. The parents had absolutely no say in whether their son got the treatment he needed. They were willing to pay, but nevertheless the took him off life support.

5) Even thought this article is taking place in a different country we feel the loss of this child in San Diego. It is so important to try and save every child lifes. These children are our future, so we have to take care of them. The saddest part is Rome was willing to take Alfie to a special facility where they work to treat kids like Alfie, but the UK denied it for some odd reason. I cannot imagine the loss the parents are feeling. They had a chance to save their son, but they were blocked.

SpaceX is about to test its new rocket for astronauts by Julia Horowitz

Its a credible news source because it has its own television network and has the date of it. I checked on other news sources to that said the same thing this article says.
I guess something you could say that didn't surprise me would be that they did not catch the rocket. I really did not find anything surprising in the article. They tried to catch it with a net maybe they could have like a back up plan built in with the rocket that would have caused as much damage.
Something that they could have added in the article is what actually happened to the rocket. It was like surface level information on how it failed.
